Cannabis Travel Weekly - No. 39
Word of the Week - Balance
Cannabis-related experiences center around balance, well-being, and wellness. When ingested, the therapeutic compounds that are found in the cannabis plant travel throughout the body and communicate with the human endocannabinoid system receptors. Together, they work toward restoring one’s body to a state of homeostasis, a ‘state of balance’. #theganjatraveler
Data Point of the Week - German Cannabis Experiences, American Interest
According to the European Cannabis Market Survey from Bloomwell Group, 66 percent of the Americans surveyed saying they "would visit a cannabis dispensary or social consumption lounge" in Germany when legalized. #bloomwellgroup
Insight - Cannabis experiences will have a bespoke cultural twist and nuance, especially curated environments where tourists spend time and invest attention and energy like cannabis lounges, cafes, tasting rooms, sampling rooms, and wellness centers. Shops are more transactional in nature. Branded experiences are the next frontier and all cannabis brands and experience centers must be preparing for the rise of modern day curated cannabis experiences, applicable in the travel economy and beyond.

Article Spotlight - Destination Advocacy: "NO on Measure A"
For Humboldt County, California - the modern day cannabis tourism and travel trend offers extraordinary economic growth opportunities. But those opportunities can ONLY be realized if the environment in Humboldt County is enabling and supportive of the legal cannabis industry succeeding and thriving. When a modern day cannabis interested visitor or traveler arrives in a destination they stay in hotels and spend money at restaurants, attractions, spas, and other businesses while in town. Cannabis may entice the visit and drive the destination booking, but multiple businesses enjoy the financial benefit from those cannabis-interested tourist dollars captured while in town.
Unfortunately, an initiative called Measure A has surfaced in Humboldt County and it threatens the future of cannabis travel and tourism for Humboldt. If passed, the 38-page Measure A initiative would amend the county’s General Plan to restrict the size and number of new cannabis-growing operations across the county, ban mixed-light and indoor grows, and limit cultivation permits to one per person/corporation per parcel. It would also impose new rules for water storage, well-drilling, access roads, generators and more.
More specifically, the Measure A definition of “EXPANSION” prevents any farm greater than 10,000 square feet from increasing water, energy use, or new structures. Safely accommodating the public on a cannabis farm would require additional resource usage, which is prohibited according to the Initiative. Cannabis farmers must apply for a “Public Accommodation Permit” from Planning & Building, which is a second permit, that “expand” resource use on the farm. ALL of the above are additional barriers and deterrents to the evolution of modern day cannabis travel and tourism. Measure A, if it passes, will hurt Humboldt County businesses and residents, cannabis and beyond.
Humboldt County Visitors Bureau (HCVB), the Destination Marketing Organization of Humboldt County, has taken a pro-active role in drafting a position letter on Measure A - taking a clear stand of "NO on Measure A". Destination Organizations, especially those where the stakes are high (like Humboldt County) must advocate and empower cannabis travel and tourism innovation. Proactively advocating for inclusion and experience economy development is time well spent. #cannabistravel #cannabistourism
