Cantilever: the emergency pump for Landfills

Landfills are waste management systems that need reliable instruments to handle aggressive liquids and control their level.

When heavy rainfall or other circumstances bring to an excessive accumulation of liquid is essential to remove the excess fluid promptly to prevent problems to the environment. In such critical situations, cantilever pumps can solve all the troubles due to their reliability and versatility.

Cantilever has an extended shaft supported only from one end, this means that has no bushings, bearings or mechanical seals in touch with the pumped medium.

This unique design makes this kind of pumps ideal for pumping liquids with high solid content, hot fluids, very aggressive chemicals or in situations where traditional pumps can have problems.

During rainfall or exceptional events, landfills can quickly receive large volumes of liquid also with potential flooding. This liquid, called percolate, is very aggressive and also dangerous for the environment, that's why must be treated very carefully. Cantilever pumps are usually installed in the pits collecting this wastewater coming from the landfill yard: thank to their construction without bushing in touch with the liquid they can run dry without level control and so increasing operational efficiency and safety.

  • The support with bearings can be installed above or below the plate to get a 40 cm longer pump with the same shaft (see the first picture of the article).
  • The pump can be installed at the side of the tank or can have a suction pipe to reach the bottom of the sump.
  • The cantilever is available with vortex, channel and closed impeller according to the presence and type of solids.
  • This kind of pump is available in different materials like Cast Iron, Stainless Steel and also Super Duplex.

As already explained, cantilever pumps have just a stub shaft without bushings, bearings or mechanical seals in touch with the pumped medium; this means that the only maintenance needed is greasing the support with bearings to keep them lubricated. This low maintenance increases operational reliability, ensuring continuous luquid removal during emergency situations.

By minimizing maintenance and repair, cantilever pumps offer long-term cost savings. Furthermore, their ability to handle solids reduces the risk of pump clog, which can lead to operational issues and costly downtime. The durability and versatility of cantilever pumps make them a cost-effective investment for landfill operators looking for reliable emergency pump solutions.
