Carbon Tax for Shipping Sector
In 2018 of January European Union has put into effect of EU MRV for screening, data collecting and for analysis how shipping sector effecting the GHG and climate change on earth.
Collecting data has been released and it shows that Shipping Sector is responsible of total GHG emissions by the 2% - 3%. According to report, this information covers around 10800 ships of various types, services and cargo carried, ranging from ro-ro passenger ships to bulk carriers, tankers and container ships. The CO2 emissions reported by these ships represent more than 150 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2018.
IMO has adopted decreasing of Sulphur Content of ships's fuel by 0,5 which is out of Special Emission Control Areas. All around the world, Greek Companies which runs roughly 20% of the world’s oceangoing commercial fleet, have been especially vocal, and even the White House has raised concerns over the impact the rule will have on oil prices as crude is diverted to maritime businesses but IMO stood its ground.
According to new 2020 Global Sulphur Cap, which starting on Jan. 1, 2020, some 60,000 ships will be obliged to reduce sharply their sulfur emissions. Many are preparing to switch to new low-sulfur fuel mixes or blends the energy industry is still developing, a move industry executives say will add some $50 billion in new fuel costs over the next three to four years.
All this regulatory aims and implementations shows that IMO will stand with its' ground and keep reduce GHG which cause by ships. But there is a another point here. Because Some Shipping Countries has very old ships which their ships average age is around 20 to 30 years and average service capacity of a ships is 25 year according to statistics.
First European Union has started to track the ships and by 2019 IMO has obliged all shipping companies to keep their data and submit to their flag state by used fuel oil and total distances.
Global awareness on Climate Change is increasing day by day and countries try to tackle or reduce emissions by 2050 to zero or to 2008 levels. New more Cleaner Ships and technology everyday put into service but still old ships available. According to this concern, IMO and European Union will likely to apply new tax for Flag State Countries which has old ships and This Tax will be Called CARBON TAX. IMO and EU will most probably request this additional taxes by causing the Carbon emissions and Causing the Climate Change. According to Opinion, this tax will be used for reducing emissions efforts.
