Career Advancement: The Behavioral Interview
It used to be that interviewers would ask questions like, "Tell me what you would do if..." Such theoretical questions allowed the biggest BSers to win positions they should never have. But enter behavioral interviewing. So, now the question is something like, "Describe a time, when you did...." To prepare yourself for such a behavioral interview, use the STAR technique.
The STAR technique is a structured method for answering behavioral interview questions. It helps candidates articulate past experiences clearly and effectively. Here’s how to explain the STAR technique:
- S = Situation: Begin by describing the context or background of the situation you were in. Be specific about the details to help the interviewer understand the environment you were working in.
Example: "In my previous role as a project manager, we were facing a tight deadline to deliver a client project."
- T = Task: Describe the task or challenge that you were responsible for. This focuses on your specific role in the situation.
Example: "I was tasked with leading the team to complete the project on time, despite the limited resources available."
- A = Action: Explain the actions you took to address the situation. Be detailed about what you did, how you did it, and why you made those choices.
Example: "I organized daily stand-up meetings to track progress, delegated tasks according to team strengths, and streamlined communication between departments."
- R = Result: Conclude by describing the outcomes of your actions. Include any quantifiable achievements if possible, such as meeting deadlines, saving money, or improving performance.
Example: "As a result, we delivered the project two days ahead of schedule, and the client was highly satisfied, leading to a follow-up contract worth $50,000."
