I write ... like I talk.

      Do you?

You may have wondered,

“Why does he leave so much white space …

            between lines and sentences …

and use those elliptical dots and indents?”

When I talk, I pause between sentences and double pause between paragraphs.  That’s also the way I try to write.

I’m a storyteller.

I write … as nearly as possible …

like I am telling you a story … verbally.

When I finish ...

I want you to remember what I wrote.

I’m guessing … because I don’t know …

people must be writing like they ...

are in a hurry and ...

               text on their cell phones.

Texting is very hard to read!

Yesterday, I saw a LinkedIn post I was interested in reading … but I couldn’t.

It was twenty lines long and looked like texting from a cell phone.  There was not a single paragraph break and only one space between very long sentences.

Why would the writer make it so hard to read?

Is this a new standard?

I am aware that writing standards do change, and realize my “Chicago Manual of Style, 1993 printing” ... is now 31 years old.

That does not matter!

The only person I’m trying to please is ... you!

I want my writings to be … so easy to read …

that even a fifth grader …

can read and ... understand my message.

If you write like you speak …

       the fifth graders ... and I …

will enjoy reading your writing too!

I do my best to write like I talk. I don’t want anyone who meets me to think I’m not genuine. It doesn’t mean that I don’t try to communicate clearly and articulate my thoughts well, I just don’t focus so much on sounding “educated”. I want my words on paper and words from my mouth to sound like they come from the heart and nothing else.

I write like I talk … also. However, I do not write like I sound. When I write, I sometimes seem to come off as educated and formal because I use words that do not normally come to mind when I’m speaking. So, I intentionally change things so my words can be a closer representation of who I truly am… a hillbilly from north Georgia who knows how to spell.

This is great advice to write like you speak with the important pauses / double pauses. Thank you for sharing this!
