In case of snow, break glass.
Yesterday, from my warm, cozy home in La Ventana, Mexico, I saw pictures of the four feet of snow dumped on Sunday night in Moe's hometown of Conneautville, Pennsylvania.
It reminded me of the frequent snow storms I experienced growing up in Philadelphia and of a life lesson my dad taught me.
We had just moved into a beautiful home. I was in 6th grade and lived in that house until I moved away from Philadelphia after graduating from Temple University.
The first week we lived there, a snowstorm fell, dumping about 18 inches. It was a Sunday morning, and my Dad and I went out to shovel our sidewalk and the path to our home.
When we were finished, my Dad said, "Let's shovel our new neighbor's path and sidewalk."
It took us about a half hour, and when we finished, our new neighbor, Mrs. Silver, came outside, introduced herself, and thanked us for our kindness and consideration.
The following day, Mrs. Silver came over with a delicious chocolate cake she had baked for us.
It was the beginning of a lovely friendship. What my Dad taught me that weekend and throughout his life was the joy that comes from paying it forward.
