Catch The Wave

Can I be saved

I wanna catch the wave

Hold on; he will break

I need something to last

Raise me; I need something fast

I need something to last

How big is your love

Tell me, how high is your patience

Oh, can I be saved

I wanna to catch the wave

- Catch The Wave , Velvet Moon, 2020

Their young lives met a tragic, tragic death.

A few decades ago, a wonderful group of young people from a local charity I was involved with came together for a joyful celebration at one of the most beloved beaches in Ghana's capital, Accra. The celebration was filled with lively music, delicious food, fun dancing, and an overall atmosphere of happiness.

A few leaders braved out the sea and congregated on a small rock not far from shore.

Surrounded by calm waters, they were out in the sun.

Then it happened.

Little did they know, their lives were just about to end; a massive wave, almost from nowhere, rose and hit the rock.

When the wave had subsided, the leaders had vanished.

A few days later, our worst fears were realised. Their bodies were washed up to shore.

The happiness and joy had turned to sorrow and mourning.

This can happen to many of us, though not in tragic circumstances.

As I spoke to an entrepreneur last month about his business, this tragic event, which had been buried for decades in the crevices of my mind, came forcefully back to the fore.

I had mentored him to start, but the business took off unexpectedly quickly, and he was getting inundated with clients.

A good problem to have?

Well, no.

He wasn’t ready. He had no structures, systems, capacity, or staffing to handle the wave. Like the tragic incident earlier, his business was teetering on the brink of premature death. I was able to help because I had gone through the exact same phase earlier this year.

In charge of a high street healthcare chain, we had worked to bring the store from near oblivion to the leading store in its sector in the city.

But little did we know the wave was coming.

Almost overnight, the wave hit, inundating us. We struggled to cope with the massive influx, and because I failed to put adequate systems in place, I risked the mental health of my team. Desperate to catch the wave, I made some mistakes I regret today.

We all crave and ask for success in our lives, businesses, and dreams, but sometimes, we fail to realise that there is always a painful payoff for real success.

We need to clear the baggage if we want to carry the luggage.

Our untrained personal capacity can only handle so much. To truly achieve success, we must expand our capacity and create more room for growth while letting go of the things that no longer support us.

We need to increase, but paradoxically, we also need to decrease.

As the year comes to a close, it’s a lovely time to pause and reflect on all the waves, high and low, that we’ve gone through.

It is also an excellent moment to dream and create plans to help us implement our new aspirations.

But in all this, let’s ensure we build the increased capacity to ‘’catch the wave’’.

Merry Christmas!
