Catching up with the Managing Director

Catching up with the Managing Director

Way back in August 2019 we took the chance to interview the founder and managing director of Baker Leasing Limited, Charles Baker. Now, almost five years later, we decided to pin him down again and find out his thoughts and plans given the current economic environment and all that has happened in the last five years …..

·  How do you think the leasing industry has changed since you first started your career in this sector?

There is definitely more focus on automation, a less personal service and less direct contact with customers. However, I have avoided this trend. I always instil that the priority is customer service, developing good relationships with our customers and resellers. I believe in understanding the individual needs and requirements of their businesses and for me that will never change.

·  How have your aims or goals for Baker Leasing Ltd changed in the last five years?

What a five years its been!

As a company in the last five years we have become more flexible in our working environment, like many businesses. All our employees have the freedom to work from home and this has been a very positive step in supporting the work life balance for the whole team.

Our goal has always been to work as closely as possible with all of our customers and resellers. The experience we have gained over the 23 years we have been in business has allowed us the truly support them through the adversity we have all been through.

As a company we are now entering a phase of growth again as the economy recovers, but no matter what the goal is to maintain our hands on approach, with open communication and high level of customer service to deliver the best possible advice and support.

·  Who would you say has been your business mentor?

I have never had just one specific business mentor.

My Dad was always an inspiration to me; running his own businesses, being an entrepreneur. He set a real example when it came to work ethic and supporting your family.

I do have a lot of contacts and colleagues that I have stayed in touch with and it is always great to hear what they are doing and share our thoughts and ideas.

·  If you could own any business today, other than Baker Leasing Ltd, which one would it be and why?

I think it would have to be Liverpool FC. I have always been completely focussed on Baker Leasing and making it a successful business, but I think Liverpool FC could tempt me to get involved.

·  What advice would you give to somebody starting their own business today?

Having your own business is all about hard work and having a clear business plan. Also, be willing and able to adapt to the challengers you will face. Know your numbers! You must always know the details when it comes to your cash flow, profit and loss, and tax situation. I am constantly getting comments on how relentless I am; how focussed I am and never taking no for an answer. Most importantly – stay positive!

·  What do you think will be the biggest challenges to business for the rest of 2024 and into 2025?

Current markets are extremely rate competitive due to high interest rates. I would say businesses need to focus on their growth plans and not be dissuaded by negative coverage of the cost of living and high inflation. There is always availability for finance to drive growth and it is just a case of taking the right approach that suits the current situation of your business. I would advise businesses to keep talking to people like Baker Leasing to research the options available, that way we can use all of our experience to find the right financial solutions.

·  How do you spend your free time and what do you do to relax away from the office?

I enjoy going out for dinner and socialising with friends, spending time with my family, listening to live music, watching football, playing golf, spending time with my 3 sons and trips away.

·  What is your main focus for the future?

Professionally its growing Baker Leasing Ltd further, continuing to expand our customer base and network of resellers in the UK. Personally, its looking after my family, enjoying life and staying healthy.
