Gwendolyn Summers: Preparing New York’s Workforce for the Clean Energy Boom

With four years in the clean energy industry, Gwendolyn Summers serves as the Senior Project Manager of Workforce Development & Training at NYSERDA. Her work is centered on preparing New York’s workforce for the rapidly growing clean energy sector.

One of Gwendolyn’s most notable projects is the Pay for Success Clean Energy Training initiative, launched in 2021. Supported by up to $8.1 million in federal funding under the Social Impacts Partnerships to Pay for Results Act (SIPPRA), the program is designed to help individuals transition into meaningful clean energy careers. Partnering with Social Finance and MDRC, the program has served hundreds of low-wage workers, unemployed individuals, and young people aged 18 to 24, helping them gain the skills needed to thrive in clean energy roles.

“The clean energy industry is home to thousands of high-quality, family sustaining jobs, promising a pathway to a rewarding career,” Gwendolyn says. “In New York State alone, total employment in the clean energy sector is expected to increase by more than 60%, adding at least 211,000 jobs by 2030.”
