Celebrating Inclusion: Swiss Days of Action for the Rights of People with Disabilities

The “Swiss Days of Action for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” are running until 15 June. On this occasion, ten23 is happy to support the initiative as an active inclusive employer, following our commitments towards #People, #Patients and #Planet and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Find out more about the event here (in German only)

We are working together with mitschaffe.ch, a recruitment company that brings people with disabilities and employers together, thereby enriching the world of work with diversity and inclusion.  We interviewed the founder and director of mittschaffe.ch, Thomas Bräm , about the challenges that people with disabilities face when looking for a job and what solutions mitschaffe.ch can offer.

What specific programs or services does mitschaffe.ch offer to support people with disabilities in their job search and placement?

mitschaffe.ch offers its services using the staff leasing model, including job coaching. This means that we support employers and employees in filling positions for people with disabilities. Our job coaches also provide support throughout the entire period of employment.

How does mitschaffe.ch address the individual needs and skills of jobseekers to find suitable jobs?

By prioritizing their resources over their deficits, we focus on their potential and look for a solution tailored to each individual.

Are there other examples of successful placements in companies like ten23?

Yes, today around 150 people with disabilities throughout Switzerland work in the primary labour market via mitschaffe.ch. Across all sectors, whether in catering, retail, trade, public administration, manufacturing and retail companies or in the service industry. Major players such as H&M, McDonalds and Sunrise are also among them.

What challenges does mitschaffe.ch see in the integration of people with disabilities into the labour market and how are these being overcome?

There are still a few to mention:

  • Some companies would like to take steps in the area of inclusion and diversity, but don't really know how to go about it.
  • Other companies would like to hire people with disabilities but can't find the right candidates.
  • Many of our applicants do not fit 1:1 into an existing job profile because they may not be able to carry out all the tasks due to their disability. I'm thinking of a computer scientist with autism. He or she can program wonderfully or test software, but can't provide first-level support on the phone. Companies need to make adjustments so that these barriers can be broken down.

Are there certain success factors or best practices that mitschaffe.ch has identified?

It takes a little courage from both sides, a lot of openness and the joy of mutual learning. Our model of “job carving” often helps too; from to carve out a job. Companies collect work in the company that can also be carried out by people with disabilities and combine it into a job profile.

How can companies and society as a whole support mitschaffe.ch in advancing its mission?

Every company that employs a person with a disability raises the visibility of the topic and makes other companies want to join in. I have often heard the sentence: ‘Ah, if that works for company XY, it should work for us, too....’

Thanks Thomas for the interview! Keep up the good work!🙌
