Celebrating Publication: Black Male Principals Engaging Black Parents in Urban Charter Schools

I'm thrilled to announce that my latest article, "Black Male Principals Engaging Black Parents in Urban Charter Schools," has been published in the Journal of Education and Learning!

This qualitative study delves into Black male principals' strategies for fostering and sustaining meaningful parent engagement within urban charter schools. By exploring their experiences and perspectives, the research uncovers valuable insights into building trust, facilitating open communication, and establishing a welcoming school environment.

Key themes from the study include:

  • The Significance of Relationships: Building strong, respectful relationships between principals and parents is crucial for effective engagement.
  • Visibility Matters: Principals present and visible in the school community during events and daily activities foster a sense of connection and trust.
  • "Real Talk": Open and honest conversations, even about sensitive topics, create a space for understanding and collaboration.
  • Addressing Trauma: Acknowledging and addressing the trauma experienced by Black families is essential for building a supportive school environment.
  • Cultivating Care and Love: It is paramount to create a school environment where students feel loved, seen, and valued.

These findings highlight the importance of culturally responsive practices and the unique contributions of Black male principals in promoting meaningful parent engagement. The study offers valuable recommendations for educational leaders and policymakers to enhance parent engagement in urban charter schools.

I am grateful to my dissertation committee, the study participants, and the Department of Education staff at Manhattanville University for their invaluable support.
