Florence Melton: Inventor and Business Woman

Inventor and Education entrepreneur Florence Zacks Melton (1911 – 2007).

Her Career

  • In the 1940s, Florence Melton developed a removable shoulder pad, Shoulda-Shams, for the tailored look of the 40s. She, her husband Aaron Zacks, and businessman Harry Streim started Shoulda-Moulders Co., and worked on developing slippers, bathrobes, and pillows.
  • The company was renamed R.G. Barry, which was named after their children: Richard Streim, Gordon Zacks, and Barry Zacks.
  • While at R.G. Barry, Florence invented the world's first foam-soled, soft washable slipper, known internationally as Dearfoams.
  • As a driving force in the organization and a consultant for product development, she was granted nineteen patents that included devices for exercise, food preparation and physical therapy.

An Education Entrepreneur

The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School

  • A partnership between the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and communities and educators in the United States, Canada, Australia and South Africa.
  • Engages adult learners in a study of Jewish texts and ideas.
  • Over 30,000 individuals have graduated since 1986.

The Florence Melton Communiteen High School

  • Addressing the needs of post-bar-bat mitzvah teens, Florence saw this school as a way to set teens on a Jewish journey that could continue throughout their lives.
  • The school encourages high-school students to explore their Jewish identity in a nondenominational and discussion-based environment.

Awards and Recognition

Melton received a number of awards including:

  • Honorary doctorates from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
  • The Scopus Award from the American Friends of the Hebrew University.
  • The Ohio State University Distinguished Service Award.

Ann Powers and Dixie Simmons: Female innovators create baggallini

Dixie Powers and Ann Simmons, both international Delta Airline flight attendants, loved to shop. However, they realized they had a problem.

  • They confused the various currency from different countries often mixing more valuable currency with currency of the country they were in. The result: overpaying for products.
  • Their first solution was to use various plastic bags to separate the currencies.
  • Over coffee they designed a nylon currency bag with separate pockets that provided the organization they needed. The currency bags were so effective they began selling them to other flight attendants. Of course, other women saw the bags and wanted them too.

By the mid 1990’s they launched baggallini and began selling affordable, light weight, well organized handbags.
