Celebrating World Clinical Exercise Physiology Day: The power of movement in health care
Today marks the inaugural World Clinical Exercise Physiology Day, a day dedicated to highlighting the crucial role clinical exercise physiologists (CEPs) play in enhancing health outcomes worldwide. Our Exercise Physiologists are at the forefront of using exercise as medicine, helping to prevent and manage chronic diseases, support recovery and improve overall well-being.
The role of Clinical Exercise Physiologists
Clinical Exercise Physiologists work across various healthcare settings to prescribe exercise interventions tailored to individual needs. Whether managing conditions like heart disease, diabetes or arthritis, or assisting patients recovering from surgery or injury, CEPs use scientifically-backed exercise programs to promote health and restore function.
Exercise goes beyond just physical health, it is closely linked to psychological and social wellbeing, including:
The importance of exercise in preventative health
Exercise physiology is more than rehabilitation—it’s a cornerstone of preventative health care. By crafting exercise plans tailored to clients’ medical conditions and abilities, CEPs help individuals build resilience against chronic illnesses. Regular physical activity offers numerous benefits, from lowering cholesterol and blood pressure to improving mental health and sleep quality. These advantages are critical in managing obesity, diabetes, hypertension and even cancer recovery.
Prehabilitation: Preparing for surgery
One of the emerging trends in clinical exercise physiology is prehabilitation, which prepares clients physically for upcoming surgeries, such as total knee or hip replacements. By strengthening muscles, enhancing cardiovascular fitness and building overall resilience, prehabilitation supports faster recovery with fewer complications. This approach is particularly relevant for metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) patients, where exercise can enhance outcomes and minimise surgical risks.

2moTremendously proud of this achievement, the culmination of several years of investigation, trials, refinement and now growth. Thanks are extended to Damian Gorman, Anthony McIntosh, Nick Cox and Scott McDonald as longtime believers and supporters of the vision to realise the untapped potential of leisure facilities becoming a partner in health service provision in Australia. A shoutout to Ryan Mifsud for his leadership from the onset, providing evidence in regard the impact of this service, and being the person who first broke the ice on this idea while at WaterMarc. Both Grant Connors and Victoria Goodwin-Barlow have been incredibly supportive of this initiative, and enabled it to flourish. Most importantly, deep, deep thanks to Kia Naylor whose passion, resilience, insights and commitment have ensured under her leadership this initiative is the huge success it has become.
