Does the Job Search Just Suck Right Now?
This is a question I have to ask after reading headlines like “Why job searches suck right now” (Thanks, Business Insider.)
It’s true that the situation is a little all over the place. Some companies are hiring, others are laying off, and still others are simply freezing. People with impressive resumes and decades of professional experience are finding it harder than they expected to find the right new role. People get ghosted left and right.
The good news is that having a period of inactivity on your resume is not the stigma it used to be. You just might have to get creative in order to land the right role.

The Degrading Angst of Being Ghosted

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal tells the story of a marketing professional who, after all these rounds, never received a call back despite calling, texting, and emailing.
So rude and unprofessional!
As a Founder, I find it horrifying when job seekers are treated this way. While I sympathize with overextended hiring managers, there’s no excuse for blowing off an eager job seeker to this extent.

Are You Rage Applying?
You’re so fed up with the job that you’re applying for new ones from your desk at work. Etiquette be damned; you’re just feeling desperate. This is not a new phenomenon, but it has a catchy new name: rage applying.
People have been lashing out at their current jobs by impulsively applying for new ones for decades. Digital job boards have certainly made this easier, but the impulse has always been there. When someone approaches me and says they are looking for a new job, I want to know they’re serious. But that’s not to say that rage appliers can’t be serious about it!
You never know what fabulous life change is going to come out of a mid-day work-related frustration. But better to be discreet and contact a recruiter than boldly bring up Indeed on your work laptop from the office.
