CERN MasterClass in Sarajevo

MasterClass is one of the greatest projects for high school students interested in science, particularly in Physics, namely Particle Physics. It is an event designed and enabled by CERN, to bring Particle Physics and High Energy Physics in general, closer to students and give them a taste of what is like to be at source of science today, what is to be among people trying to discover the deepest mysteries of our universe and how did everything start.

MasterClass has been present for years now in more than 50 countries all over the globe, but this is the first time that it has been organized in Sarajevo.

April 16th 2019 we will remember by an event that brought CERN in lives of Sarajevo high school students who enjoyed in lectures held by eminent CERN scientists, in simulations and calculations, live video conference with hundreds of students and scientists across the globe and in quiz that just confirmed how much they had profited of the day.

Lectures were held by professors Kerim Suruliz, PhD, Despina Hatzifotiadou, PhD and Yiota Foka, PhD. It was great to see short films, hear about the matter and antimatter, dark matter and dark energy and all the other wonders of the universe. Students were inspired and asking lots of questions, but in one moment, we just didn't have enough time for all their intrigue and wondering, and hopefully there will be soon something great as this to fill the void from students' quest for science and knowledge to what is offered in our institutions.

Nothing of this would be possible without help and initiative of a great man, dr. Edmond Offermann who made contacts and connections between CERN scientists and Bosnian professors, and who did enormous thing, who financed everything for this event!

Unfortunately, local organizers did not have good enough communication with media, and this big event wasn't present in public space, and not even at one place name of this great man was mentioned.

Still, students were thrilled and overall goal was accomplished! And that's something big and positive we all should be happy and proud of! I was happy as a physicist and Sarajevo citizen that something like this was organized in Sarajevo, and that Sarajevo became part of the world in this way too.
