AustCham Korea co-hosts Joint Roundtable Discussion with AKBC
On 3rd July, AustCham Korea members and special guests warmly welcomed the Australia-Korea Business Council (AKBC) delegation at a co-hosted roundtable event held at the Grand Hyatt Seoul. Emceed by AustCham Korea Chairman, Mr Ross Gregory, and AKBC Chairman, the Hon. Martin Ferguson AM, the event attracted 28 senior business leaders and Australian government representatives actively engaged in the Australia-Korea business corridor.
The roundtable served as an excellent platform for high-level networking and facilitated an open dialogue on the current state of the bilateral relationship between Australia and Korea. Leveraging the wealth of expertise present, the discussion delved into opportunities for further cross-border collaboration in critical sectors such as minerals, renewable energy, hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage (CCS). Additionally, attendees explored continued growth within the food and beverage (F&B), education, and defence sectors while underscoring the importance of people-to-people linkages.
These discussions underscored the importance of leveraging each country's strengths to foster innovation and drive sustainable growth. There was a strong emphasis on the mutual benefits of such collaborations, particularly in addressing global challenges like climate change and energy security.
The event also highlighted the role of government and industry partnerships in advancing these objectives. Representatives from both sides expressed their commitment to continuing dialogue and working together to create a favourable environment for business and investment.
AustCham Korea would like to thank the Australia-Korea Business Council and their delegation for their participation and valuable contributions.
The Chamber looks forward to further strengthening these ties at the AKBC-KABC 45th Joint Meeting, which will be held in Perth later this year. This upcoming meeting promises to be another significant milestone in the ongoing partnership between Australia and Korea, providing further opportunities to build on the foundations laid at the Seoul roundtable.

AustCham Korea Participates in ACRC Meeting to Address Regulatory Concerns.
On Friday, June 28th, representatives from AustCham Korea attended an Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC) meeting with fellow foreign chambers of commerce. The meeting, hosted by ACRC Chairman Mr Ryu and several senior representatives from the organisation, was designed to facilitate a two-way dialogue on Korea’s business environment and provide an avenue for chambers to express any business-related grievances or concerns.
Advocating on behalf of its members, Executive Director Rowan Petz raised specific concerns to the commission, particularly the difficulties reported by businesses in navigating Korea's financial terms and regulations. Petz emphasised the need for clarity and consistency in regulatory practices to foster a more favourable business climate for foreign enterprises.
The timing of this meeting is particularly pertinent as the 10th anniversary of the Korea-Australia Free Trade Agreement (KAFTA) approaches. The importance of the trade relationship between Korea and Australia cannot be overstated, with Korea being Australia's third-largest trading partner. Addressing regulatory challenges and reinforcing this bilateral relationship is vital for the benefit of Australian businesses and the broader economic growth of both nations.
AustCham Korea would like to thank the ACRC for the opportunity to participate in the roundtable discussion. Members facing regulatory challenges within the Korean market are encouraged to email membership@austchamkorea.org for assistance.

Given recent positive developments, much of the discussion focused on critical minerals, hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage (CCS). The meeting also highlighted the Chamber's work in assisting member companies in maximising their potential within the bilateral relationship.

AustCham Korea Chairman Ross Gregory Featured in the Australian Media
(5 July 2024) AustCham Korea Chairman Ross Gregory recently met with Australian journalist Bridget Carter to discuss untapped opportunities for Korean investment in Australia, calling for more support from Australian superannuation funds.
Featured in the Australian Business Review, Ross Gregor noted that it is puzzling why trade and investment aren't significantly larger between the two nations, given their historical ties and complementary economies.
Highlighting the lack of attention compared to China and Japan, Gregory calls for Australian super funds to support critical minerals projects. He suggests setting up a fund to underwrite key projects, especially those focused on energy transition and decarbonisation.
Gregory emphasises the potential for collaboration in renewable energy and critical minerals, pointing to successful examples like LG Energy Solution’s investment in Liontown Resources Limited and Samsung’s stake in Pilot Energy Limited’s ammonia project. He believes more federal and state government support is needed to strengthen the bilateral relationship and unlock investment opportunities.
He notes that Australia and South Korea share significant strategic and economic interests, making this an opportune time to deepen their partnership.
“Australia is definitely open for business,” he said. “Australia can provide Korea with so many of the minerals and energy carriers that it needs and beyond that Australia has fantastic primary produce, biotech, food and beverage, sovereign technology such as quantum computing that Korea can consume and collaborate on. Korea has often been seen by Australia as the extra leg on a northeast Asian tour – this is changing but there is much more to do.”

(22 July 2024) AustCham Korea Chairman Ross Gregory sat down with Financial Review journalists Michael Read and Elouise Fowler recently in Seoul.
Mr Gregory addressed the increasing regulatory setbacks and delays affecting South Korean investments in Australian resource projects. He highlighted concerns over licensing issues, which have led South Korean investors to perceive a sovereign risk element in Australia.
Despite these challenges, Mr Gregory remains optimistic about future collaboration and improvements in the regulatory environment, ensuring a more conducive investment for South Korean enterprises in Australia.

LG Energy Solution Invests $250 Million in Liontown Resources for Strategic Lithium Supply
In a significant development for the critical minerals industry, LG Energy Solution has committed $250 million to Australia’s Liontown Resources. This strategic investment aims to enhance the production capacity of the Kathleen Valley lithium project, which targets an output of three million tonnes of lithium spodumene concentrate annually, with plans for future expansion.
This substantial financial backing supports a 15-year supply agreement, ensuring LG Energy Solution will receive 1.75 million tonnes of lithium spodumene concentrate. This deal is vital for meeting the growing demand for lithium in electric vehicle (EV) batteries and aligns with the compliance requirements of the US Inflation Reduction Act. The investment underscores the importance of a reliable supply chain for the burgeoning global EV market.
The partnership extends beyond just financial investment, as the two companies are also exploring the establishment of a joint lithium conversion plant. This facility would process the offtake material and accommodate future production volumes, further cementing the long-term collaboration between LG Energy Solution and Liontown Resources.
Tony Ottaviano, CEO of Liontown Resources, highlighted the strategic importance of LG Energy Solution’s investment, noting it as a strong endorsement of the Kathleen Valley project’s quality and the capabilities of the Liontown team. This collaboration is poised to position Liontown as a globally significant provider of battery minerals, which are essential for the transition to a low-carbon future.
This partnership not only demonstrates the strengthening of economic ties between Australia and Korea but also exemplifies the critical role of the minerals industry in the global shift towards sustainable energy solutions.
