Darwin Dialogue on Critical Minerals and Rare Earth Elements
In a significant development underscoring the strategic importance of critical minerals and rare earth elements (REE) in today's technology-driven world, Mr Ross Gregory, the Chairman of AustCham Korea, participated in the Darwin Dialogue in Australia from 17 to 19 April.
This annual forum, hosted by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), fosters international cooperation and discussion around critical minerals essential for modern technologies, including renewable energy systems and electronics.
The Darwin Dialogue served as a crucial platform for leaders from academia, industry, and government to collaborate and steer the conversation on the sustainable and secure supply of critical minerals and REE. This year's dialogue is particularly timely, as the demand for these resources surges amidst a global push towards green technologies.
Mr Gregory's participation highlights AustCham Korea's commitment to bridging Australian and Korean interests in the critical minerals sector. South Korea, recognised as a major technology hub, relies heavily on imports of these essential materials used in manufacturing high-tech products such as semiconductors and batteries. Mr Gregory's insights are particularly valuable, considering his extensive background in international business and economic relations between Australia and Korea.
Throughout the conference, attendees engaged with key decision-makers in discussing challenges such as resource security and environmental sustainability in mining practices. The dialogue also covered innovative mineral extraction and processing technologies, ensuring that the supply chains are efficient, environmentally benign, and socially responsible.
As nations worldwide navigate the complexities of mineral security and economic development, the Chamber seeks to continue its engagements at forums such as the Darwin Dialogue to ensure deeper, more strategic collaboration between Australia and Korea in the resources sector.

AustCham Korea Welcomes Melbourne Gin Company as a Small Business Member
AustCham Korea would like to welcome Melbourne Gin Company as its newest Small Business Member.
Inspired by cultural capital, the Melbourne Gin Company (MGC) was established in 2012 by Andrew Marks, a Yarra Valley winemaker. Andrew sought to doff his hat to London Dry Gin by creating the very first Melbourne Dry Gin, pioneering a new local industry while merging his twin loves for gin martinis and his hometown.
MGC seeks to pay homage to a city celebrated for its culture and worthy of its own unique spirit. Made in stills originally designed for making perfume, MGC creates classic gin with a twist of Melbourne. As an independent distillery, MGC takes an innovative approach to distillation, incorporating locally grown and native botanicals along with fresh local rainwater. MGC gins are Australia’s iconic grape gins, handcrafted, batch distilled, and non-chill filtered.
MGC Melbourne Dry Gin is the very first Australian gin launched with such ambition, paving the way for the emerging local gin industry. MGC Single-shot is a powerfully aromatic, juniper-forward gin that won the Global Gin Master award in 2018 and 2022. MGC Negroni is a top-class ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktail, raved about by award-winning chefs from around the world.

Australia’s Federal Budget Unveils the “Future Made in Australia” Plan,
Paving the Way for Enhanced Korea-Australian Trade and Investment
Australia's Federal Budget introduces the "Future Made in Australia" plan, allocating $22.7 billion over the next decade to establish the country as a leader in renewable energy, critical minerals, and hydrogen production. Central to this policy is the Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive, providing $2 per kilogram for renewable hydrogen production, aligning with Korea’s hydrogen integration goals. This initiative opens doors for joint ventures and technology exchanges between Australia and Korea.
The policy also focuses on critical minerals, with a 10% rebate on processing costs through the Critical Minerals Production Tax Incentive. As demand for minerals like lithium and cobalt surges globally, this presents an opportunity for Korean investors to engage in a vital supply chain, particularly benefiting Korea’s tech and renewable energy sectors.
Additionally, investments include $1 billion for the Solar Sunshot and $523.2 million for the Battery Breakthrough Initiative, enhancing Australia’s role in clean energy and offering investment opportunities for Korean technology sectors.
A new streamlined investment process will simplify entry for significant Korean investments, providing a faster and more coordinated approval process. This aims to bolster Korean capital inflow and strengthen bilateral ties.
The budget also emphasizes community and sustainable development, aiming to convert economic gains into social benefits like job creation, aligning with global environmental goals and Korean values of corporate responsibility.
The "Future Made in Australia" policy not only promotes domestic growth but also strengthens global partnerships, especially with Korea. AustCham Korea continues to play a key role in fostering this cooperation through networking, advocacy, and information sharing.

Samsung and Pilot Energy Join Forces for Future Clean Hydrogen in Australia
In a significant step towards advancing the global clean energy sector, Samsung E&A is set to participate in the “Austrade CCUS” program organised by the Australian Government from 20th to 24th May. This initiative, in collaboration with various government agencies, will see the involvement of approximately ten domestic companies, including subsidiaries of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and major construction firms, aiming to bolster their engagement with clean hydrogen and Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) technologies.
Samsung E&A has been proactive in securing clean hydrogen and CCUS technologies, participating in numerous global projects. The programme will see these companies, including Samsung, focusing on introducing Australia's hydrogen projects and conducting site visits to local businesses. The engagement is anticipated to pave the way for further business expansions, particularly for Samsung C&T, which has been actively pursuing hydrogen business activities in Australia since last year.
Among the Australian companies involved in this initiative is Pilot Energy Limited, a key player currently conducting oil field projects in the south-western region of Australia. Pilot Energy has ambitious plans to produce 1.2 million tonnes of clean ammonia annually from 2027. Their strategy involves leveraging existing oil field infrastructure to enhance cost competitiveness and pursuing MWPEC, seeking collaboration with Korean companies.
Pilot Energy's involvement highlights the critical role of local companies in Australia's burgeoning hydrogen industry. The collaboration aims to explore hydrogen opportunities, with the potential for significant advancements in the hydrogen value chain sector.
This initiative is aligned with Australia's active expansion of its hydrogen industry and mirrors the Korean Government's increased focus on clean hydrogen power generation and revised targets for hydrogen vehicle distribution.
