This Christmas, Let’s Redefine Joy

This Christmas, Let’s Redefine Joy

Christmas. A time wrapped in the warm glow of fairy lights, adorned with the glitter of baubles, and heralded as the season of joy

But for many, behind the festive cheer lies an unspoken reality—a time of struggle, loneliness, and longing

I know this might not be the narrative you’re used to hearing

But I believe it’s a conversation worth having because Christmas doesn’t feel joyful for everyone

And that’s okay

Let’s pause for a moment and explore why

The Unseen Reality of Christmas

Behind the perfectly curated Instagram posts and the heart-warming adverts lies a different kind of Christmas for millions

Families grieving empty chairs at their tables. Individuals battling the deafening silence of loneliness.

Parents stretched to breaking point, struggling to provide gifts they can’t afford with the rising cost of living

Neuroscience tells us that this time of year can amplify emotions.

Our brains are wired to reflect on what we have—or lack—when we see symbols of abundance everywhere

The mismatch between expectation and reality can lead to heightened stress, sadness, and even shame

But what if we reframed Christmas?

What if, instead of pursuing the illusion of perfection, we focused on what truly matters: connection, compassion, and humanity?

My Christmas Day Mission

This year, I’ve decided to spend Christmas Day differently. I’ll be joining forces with my charity The Musketeers and The Salvation Army to feed the lonely, homeless and poor—a small act of kindness to remind those who feel forgotten that they matter

It’s a privilege to give back, and it’s a reminder of the raw beauty of humanity

Because isn’t that what Christmas should be about?

Not the presents under the tree, but the presence we bring into each other’s lives!

How You Can Change Your Christmas

You don’t have to feed the homeless to make a difference (though you’re welcome to join us!). Changing your Christmas could mean reaching out to someone who might be alone, inviting a neighbour for a cup of tea, or starting a new family tradition rooted in gratitude rather than gifts.

Here’s an idea: Why not create a "gratitude chain"?

Each person writes one thing they’re grateful for on a strip of paper, and you link them together to form a chain of gratitude. Simple, powerful, and a tangible reminder of the joys you do have.

Prime Your Mind This Christmas

While you’re celebrating—or reflecting—this Christmas, I invite you to tune into the MindPrime Podcast. Our latest episodes are designed to inspire and awaken the extraordinary in you:

• Episode: "The Miracle Man" – Discover the story of Baba Sam, who defied science to heal himself. His journey is a powerful reminder of resilience and hope.

• Episode: "Lessons from Water" – Learn how the properties of water can teach us to adapt, flow, and find strength in softness and heal. With Sheena Cantar

• Episode: "Rediscovering Humanity" – Explore what it truly means to connect with others in an increasingly disconnected world. With the wonderful human Chris Berryman

Pop in your headphones as you wrap gifts, cook Christmas dinner, or take a reflective walk

Let these stories be a spark to inspire your own extraordinary moments.

This year, let’s rewrite the Christmas script. Let’s embrace its imperfections, honour its challenges, and create joy not from glitter but from genuine connection.

After all, Christmas isn’t a day on the calendar. It’s a feeling we create

So, what will you do differently this Christmas?

Perhaps it’s time to redefine joy—not just for yourself, but for someone who might need it most.

Here’s to a Christmas that truly matters.

With warmth and hope,
