CITYMAPPER: 3 More Lessons to Take Away!

CITYMAPPER: 3 More Lessons to Take Away!

Just to be clear. Nobody is out to 'get' CityMapper. And least of all, us at Urban Hawk. Indeed, we proudly welcome ANY success story in tech, innovation and the crossover between sectors. That said? It is important to note that each and every one of those examples is itself a wake-up call to immediate action.

Think bigger. Do better. And never be afraid to dissect quite how and why a particular application has taken off, given that yes, indeed, therein lies the clue to how best one might compete. The journey continues.

So how can YOU, we, they et al become the NEXT CITYMAPPER? Not easy. Not an exact science or formula. But by no means impossible, either. Consider the following:

  1. ENGAGEMENT: CityMapper made users PART of their story. They did not 'pay' for the app yet, conversely, are invited to behave like the investors who do provide the core cash. No version of the brand in your city yet? No problem! Fill out a linked form and pitch CityMapper, directly, on the hoof/hop and so, that conversation has started.
  2. HARDWARE / SOFTWARE / PERFECT TIMING! Luck, of course, plays a role here. Now that is NOT to say that one ought to simply sit and wait for divine or other intervention when launching either service or product. But CityMapper was shrewdly matched to the Apple Watch and the launch of one product served the rise of the app and attendant service. IE: This was a company ahead of its time and reading the market, perfectly, merging and mixing service to product with launch time to match. Granted, much of that is 'on' Apple and luck. Even so: play the hand you are dealt and you stand to win the game!
  3. DATA! DATA! DATA! There was NO LIMIT on the SOURCES of data that CityMapper could use. They went above and beyond expected collation areas. The USP /innovation point was somehow going to non transport/travel areas of statistical material and THEN merging those TO a city and mobility focus. Very clever. But even MORE savvy and astute and cunning: KNOWING that in order to make that happen and thereby grow the company, the in house focus would be as much ON data management as on the applications concerned.

And YET! As I pointed out in yesterday's lesson and indeed, hint at, above? ALL the tools and methods above ARE accessible to YOU and indeed ANY upwardly thinking, committed, innovative tech enterprise. So, much as CityMapper is a success story to admire? Let's race each other to catch up and beat it. #urbanhawk
