The CMS Framework: A 3-Tiered Approach to Career Success

In an increasingly competitive business landscape, professionals and business owners need to continuously remain on the cutting-edge of their game and stay relevant. While individual talent and hard work are essential, building strong relationships can significantly accelerate career growth. In this article, we will explore the CMS framework, a three-tiered approach to career success that emphasizes the importance of hiring a coach to help you sharpen the rough edges of your skills, a mentor to guide you, so that you can leverage their experiences and achieve faster with minimal slowdowns and sponsors to open doors and introduce you to rooms where you will never have been able to access on your own.

The Role of a Coach

At the early stages of a career, as professional you will benefit greatly from the guidance and support of a coach. A coach can provide you with valuable insights, feedback, and accountability, helping you to identify your strengths and weaknesses, set realistic goals, and develop effective strategies for achieving them. Coaches can also help you to overcome obstacles and build confidence in your abilities.

The Role of a Mentor

As you gain experience and expertise, you may benefit from the guidance and support of a mentor. Mentors can also provide access to networks and opportunities that may not be readily available to individuals on their own.

Key characteristics of a good mentor include

The Role of a Sponsor

At the most senior levels of a career, you may benefit from the support of a sponsor. A sponsor is a powerful advocate who can help you to advance your career by providing opportunities, visibility, and support. Sponsors can also help you to navigate organizational politics and build relationships with key decision-makers.

Key characteristics of a good sponsor include

  • Influence and power: A sponsor should have a high level of influence within the organization and be able to open doors for the individual.
  • Willingness to advocate for the individual: A sponsor should be committed to helping the individual succeed and be willing to speak up on their behalf.
  • Ability to provide opportunities: A sponsor should be able to connect the individual with key decision-makers and provide access to high-profile projects.
  • Understanding of organizational dynamics: A sponsor should have a good understanding of the organization's culture and politics and be able to help the individual navigate these challenges.

Examples of sponsorship relationships

  • Be willing to give back and help others in their careers.
  • Be grateful for the support you receive and express your appreciation.

By cultivating strong relationships with coaches, mentors, and sponsors, individuals can accelerate their development, overcome challenges, and achieve their full potential.
