99.9% of all messaging happening on LinkedIn does not follow the rules of good messaging.
For LinkedIn cold messaging to ACTUALLY WORK, there are rules that you should follow and we are going to walk you through the do’s and don’ts, how to actually get meetings through cold outreach, and ultimately solve the problem of how to get leads on LinkedIn.
What is Cold Messaging?
Most people are familiar with the concept of cold messaging, even if they don't know the term. Cold messaging is when you send a message to someone without any prior interaction or without them expecting it. Many businesses use cold messaging as a way of marketing their products or services. While cold messaging can be effective, it's important to use it wisely. The key to successful cold messaging is sending the right message to the right target.
LINKEDIN COLD MESSAGING DO’S AND DON’TS
1. THE FOCUS SHOULD BE ON THEM
DO’S
DON’TS
When creating your cold outreach message, the main focus should be on your prospects. Use their first name and use “you” and “your” in your message. Avoid using “I”, “me”, “my” and “we” in your message. People don’t care about you, they care about themselves and they are the most interesting topic for them to talk about. They are most likely to respond to messages that talk more about what value you can give to them and answer the question “What’s in it for me?”
You can have a little bit of “I”, and “Me” in your message but that should not be the focus and theme of your message.
(Where we see most cold outreach go wrong is when people start with “We help business owners do X,Y, Z…” this is ineffective because the focus is on YOU and not on the prospects' needs and desires)
2. FOCUS ON THEIR INDUSTRY
DO’S
DON’TS
The more specific you are in your outreach message, the more likely your message will resonate with your target audience.
What you can do is put your prospects into segments. You can do this according to industry, domain, company size, job title, and many other factors.
Example: If you are targeting small dental practices, you can say “We help small dental practices get this outcome”

3. FOCUS ON THE OUTCOME
DO’S
DON’TS
Focus on the specific outcome and not on your service. Think about what specific outcome you can help your prospect achieve. The more measurable results, the better.
4. DO NOT BLAST A GENERIC MESSAGE
What most people don't realize is that cold messaging on LinkedIn can be extremely effective when done correctly. To make your messages stand out from the rest, personalize and customize your message as much as possible. You want to make sure that the message is tailored specifically for your audience and presents them with thoughtful insight into how you can work together.
5. ADD A STRONG CALL TO ACTION
DO’S
DON’TS
A call to action is the finishing touch on your message and a powerful message has a strong call to action. You have to be very specific about what you want the prospect to do next after reading your message. Your CTA should have a sense of urgency or gently steer your prospects toward setting up a call with you.
Key takeaways
LinkedIn messaging is a little more complicated than other social media platforms but if you follow these simple rules, you'll be able to create cold messages that get replies.
Remember, it's not about just sticking with what you know, but rather finding out how to make it better. You should be constantly trying new things and seeing which ones work best for your outreach.
