Commerce Minister Chairs EEC Meeting on Major Infrastructure Projects
Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai recently chaired a significant meeting of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Board, focusing on four major infrastructure projects designed to enhance Thailand's economic landscape. These projects aim to boost connectivity, improve transportation infrastructure, and support sustainable development within the EEC region.
High-Speed Rail Network
One of the focal points of the meeting was the High-Speed Rail Network, which will link three major airports: Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao. The project's construction is slated to begin in January 2025, following expected approvals in July and December 2024. This rail network aims to streamline travel between these key airports, significantly reducing travel time and enhancing the region's appeal as a hub for international travel and commerce.
U-Tapao Airport and Eastern Aviation City
The development of U-Tapao Airport and the Eastern Aviation City was another critical discussion point. The Royal Thai Navy is currently overseeing the bidding process for the construction of the second runway and taxiway. Construction is expected to commence in January 2025, with an anticipated completion date in 2029. Currently, the existing systems at U-Tapao are 26% complete, marking steady progress in this ambitious project that aims to transform the airport into a major aviation hub.
Laem Chabang Port (Phase 3)
The Laem Chabang Port, one of Thailand's most vital maritime gateways, is undergoing significant expansion as part of its Phase 3 development. Marine construction work is currently 29% complete, with the F1 port expected to open by 2027. This expansion is set to increase the port's capacity, facilitating greater trade volumes and supporting the region's economic growth.
Map Ta Phut Port (Phase 3)
Similarly, the Map Ta Phut Port is progressing through its Phase 3 development. Infrastructure work is 81% complete, while the liquid cargo port is 31% complete. The project aims for full completion by 2027, enhancing the port's capabilities to handle various types of cargo, including liquid commodities, thereby boosting Thailand's logistics and trade infrastructure.

Environmental Plan Approval
In addition to the infrastructure projects, the EEC Board approved a comprehensive environmental plan designed to balance development with environmental preservation. This plan includes strategies for effective waste management, resource sustainability, and the promotion of sustainable business practices. It also emphasizes innovation in environmental management, ensuring that the region's growth is both economically and ecologically sustainable.
Strategic Importance
These infrastructure projects and the environmental plan underscore Thailand's commitment to developing the EEC as a major economic zone. The improvements in connectivity, aviation, and port facilities are expected to attract significant investment, enhance trade capabilities, and create numerous job opportunities. Moreover, the emphasis on sustainable development highlights the EEC's role in promoting environmentally responsible growth.
The Road Ahead
The EEC Board meeting, chaired by Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, marks a pivotal step in advancing Thailand's infrastructure and economic capabilities. The approved projects and plans are set to transform the EEC into a thriving economic corridor that balances development with sustainability, positioning Thailand as a key player in the regional and global economy.
