Commitment in the path of life

Commitment in the path of life

Commitment. Such a simple, yet profound word. In speaking to different colleagues in the beginning of 2022, I found varied responses. Some have big dreams for the year with power teams and well-defined strategies. Others are worried that they have lost their passion and are wondering how they are going to make it through the year. After the turmoil of the last few years, I can understand this. And I have empathy.

In preparing for this year, I decided to focus on three concepts to help guide my decision-making: Commitment. Connection and Character. In this short reflection, I will explore the first concept namely Commitment. Commitment is the ability to stick with a choice because you sincerely believe in it, even when the initial roller-coaster of excitement is gone. This is true for decisions related to a job, projects, ideas, relationships, priorities or goals - even when it becomes difficult and you don't see the immediate outcome you were hoping for.

In doing a study of Proverbs, I found some ideas that informed my own definition of commitment: Setting your gaze straight before you with fixed purpose and considering well the path of your feet to establish your ways and to order it aright.

In order to make the right commitments in life and work, I realise that wisdom and perspective is needed. I may not understand everything, but I may understand something. I may not know how the story will end, but I can determine who holds the pen. I may not have the army that I wished for, but I have a small army that is committed to fight with me for justice and righteousness. I may even find myself in a challenging season in the middle of a desert without a clear map, but I know where to find my compass.

And more than anything else, I have a committed relationship with the Ruler of the universe Who holds my hand and guards my life. Even in the most difficult challenging and disappointing moments, I know He will work everything out according to His will and purpose. And therefore I really just need to make one commitment: To rest in His guidance and to make sure that I remain in the center of His will in making decisions.

For He has an eternal purpose that will bring Him glory. He understands everything perfectly and holds the pen of my life. He is the Captain of the army and the Creator of seasons and He brings all these elements in perfect harmony.

Therefore I will make a commitment to be quiet and listen. For He will guide me in His paths of uprightness - when I walk, my path will be clear and open. And when I run, I shall not stumble. And in the end, He will receive the glory.
