Compound Wealth Insights #2

Hello Readers

I hope you are well and enjoyed the school summer holidays. My family and I certainly made the most of the summer by enjoying lots of days out including a trip to Pegga Pig World - which my two young children absolutely loved 🙌🏽

Before anything else, I want to share my condolences for the loss of our beloved and extraordinary monarch. My thoughts are with the Royal Family as they mourn the loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Market Insights

I want to acknowledge that emotionally it is very difficult to see the drop in the value of our investment portfolios. I am in the same boat as all of you, as I personally have all (except for my 30% home deposit) of my family’s life savings invested in the financial markets in funds and portfolios like yours.

“High inflation is leading to a catastrophic cost of living crisis. Financial markets are pricing in the fact that the central banks will be forced to hike interest rates into a slowdown that could easily become a recession” – This seems to be the biggest concern in the markets at the moment!

Following the six months ended June 30, 2022, The Wall Street Journal headlined the period as the “worst first half of a year in over five decades” for U.S. stocks. Regardless, analysts and market observers, like CNBC, are widely predicting the worst is yet to come!! That is an eventuality I believe is unknowable and unpredictable. I believe this to be the case because, in my 18-year career in the markets, I have never known anyone to accurately and consistently predict markets… economies…interest rates…inflation…oil prices…wars…commodity prices…and election outcomes. Not Warren Buffett…not Elon Musk…not Fed Chairmen, and definitely not me!

Since stock prices of a remarkable number of rapidly growing small businesses and highly regarded large companies have fallen materially over the preceding eight months, I believe they are unusually attractively priced as long-term investments. This is relative to their businesses’ long-term growth prospects, earnings potential, and interest rates. Bear markets are inherently uncomfortable, but historically, they have been short-lived. They also have tended to be followed by much longer periods of market growth. Historically, markets also tend to bottom midway through economic downturns. For any long-term investor, short-term market fluctuations should be considered noise. If anything, they are typically a good time to load up on one’s highest conviction ideas.

My philosophy that I 100% follow every single day is very simple and clear - I invest for the long term (meaning years…often decades…not quarters) in terrific, competitively advantaged, growth businesses managed by exceptionally talented individuals…whom I trust.

Investment Strategies

When I discuss investment strategies with prospective clients, a common pushback in 2021 was - markets seem to be on a high now, and I rather invest when then there is a 15-20% correction.

Well, we have had the correction in 2022, and the common pushback now is - there seems to be too much uncertainty, chaos and concerns at the moment, and I'd rather invest when there is more clarity.

Both sets of reasons make no sense. There will never be the perfect setting to invest and one will always be able to find excuses.

Fact is, there are only 4 ways to become financially independent quicker (i.e. not have to sacrifice time for money) and they are:

👉🏽 1. Increase your work earnings (most people focus on it)

👉🏽 2. Reduce your living expenditure (most people would hate to do so)

👉🏽 3. Win a Lottery (fantastic if it happens!)

👉🏽 4. Make your savings/assets work harder and smarter (most people ignore this pillar!)

Financial Planning vs Investment Management

Financial planning is NOT the same as investment management… ❌

Many people hear ‘financial planning’ or ‘financial advice’ and they assume it’s all about making investments, that’s not the case!

Financial planning is about big picture thinking. For example:

👉🏽 What are your financial goals?

👉🏽 When would you like to retire?

👉🏽 Are you on track to reach your goals?

👉🏽 What plans can we put in place to help you get there?

You might not need investment management, but everyone needs financial planning.
