Confined Space Safety

Confined Space Safety

Confined Space: Every year thousands of people lost their lives during working in Confined Space. The majority of accidents are caused during working in Vessels, tanks, manholes, sewage sumps, sewers, trenches, borewells, and so on. The reason behind accidents is allowing the person to enter confined spaces without carrying out atmospheric tests or lack of awareness about the Hazard in it.

It is never be defined based on the volume of tanks or vessels it could be very giant like a submarine, ships, chemical storage tanks, or silos.

What is Confined Space?

  • It is a Space where the limited opening for Entry or Exit (one opening usually)
  • Space is not designed for the working of humans for a long time
  • It has sufficient space to perform any kind of work (it should be large enough)

In short, it is a space where the risk to human life is high due to oxygen deficiency, availability of flammable gases, toxic gases, or electrical hazards

Not performing atmospheric testing before entering the confine space is just the iceberg tip of the causes of such incidents. Get a bigger picture, a holistic view of the safety management system. What is the contribution of safety culture, how is safety integrated in the entire business operations, how committed is the Senior level management to health and safety, how trained and competent is the entrant, what about hazard awareness, recognition and control, what is the risk appetite of the company or the workers, what about supervisor competency ??? Lots to take into consideration in trying to get to the root cause. The iceberg tip presents just the symptoms, get to the roots to know the disease and cure from there!!

Indeed, a confined space safety is a crucial global challenge, as it impacts workers across various industries. For example, deaths in sewage systems or oil tanks highlight the need for stringent safety protocols and atmospheric testing. Enhanced training and awareness can mitigate risks, ensuring safer work environments and preventing tragic accidents.Thank you for sharing 😊

Metrocorp have been doing inspections and major rehabilitation / repair works in confined spaces for over 30 years . Our current goal is to reduce the number of personnel that are required to enter and work within the confined space, we are doing this through innovation / technologies for non-man entry equipment. However there is still the need to have personnel enter confined spaces. For this to take place careful pre-planning and controls are required to be implemented by experienced personnel. What concerns us is we still see inexperienced companies and personnel planning and entering confined spaces to conduct works due to being the most cost competitive price bid. The high risk nature of confined space should not be underestimated or short cuts taken under any circumstances. Maintaining highly trained staff and specialized equipment for confined space works comes at a cost. Which is far less than someone's life or limb.
