Confronting PFAS Pollution – Protecting our Environment

First developed in 1934, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are defined by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) as organic compounds with at least one perfluorinated methyl group (-CF3) or perfluorinated methylene group (-CF2). This definition encompasses more than 10,000 compounds currently listed as PFAS.

Their success stems from their utility. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), commonly known as Teflon™, was the first widely manufactured PFAS. Discovered by accident in 1938, its unique qualities, including chemical inertness, durability and resistance to heat, oil, grease, stains and water, led to its use in multiple applications, most famously in non-stick cookware. These same properties have enabled PFAS to be used in a wide range of products and industries, from clothing to medical devices, and semiconductors to firefighting foams.

A long-term environmental problem

However, these properties of durability and chemical inertness mean PFAS are often referred to as ‘forever chemicals.’ Once introduced into the environment many PFAS persist indefinitely. This is a major problem because certain PFAS are now recognized as harmful to human and animal health. Contact with specific PFAS can lead to serious health conditions, including thyroid disease, high cholesterol, liver damage, kidney and testicular cancer, reduced vaccine response and lower birth weights.

This is a global problem, but the effects manifest locally.

When the California State Water Board began requiring testing of drinking water systems and other high-risk locations (landfills, airports, industrial chrome-platers, refineries and publicly owned treatment works (POTWs)) in 2019, the Bay Area Clean Water Agencies (BACWA) started working with the San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI) on a study to quantify PFAS In wastewater. We provided comprehensive measurements using targeted analyses, and a specialty test called the total oxidizable precursors (TOP) assay, which accurately quantifies PFAS levels and detects more PFAS than standard tests. This allowed BACWA and SFEI to better track PFAS through the waste treatment process. The study found that the majority of biosolid samples were below actionable PFAS concentration levels. The results are now being used to inform source controls and other PFAS management strategies.¹

Great Information, the federal government is starting to take steps with acceptable levels found in parts per million within the water systems of many states. It is imperative for officials to have the right company to help meet the new demands.
