Conscious AI

Conscious AI

AI is neither conscious or sentient.  It is simply a tool or emerging technology that can be used to benefit society in many ways.  Ultimately it is a reflection of our current level of consciousness.  AI is digesting our data and evolving at an alarmingly fast rate.  At its current rate of growth it is likely to have an equivalent IQ of over 1,000 within next few years.  We are in the process of creating a black box without ethics or values.

For the humane advancement of artificial intelligence to occur it is important for us to be investing in the development of our emotional intelligence.  We must be able to reduce the drama, chaos, and conflict change triggers in us.  AI can be used as a tool to benefit society in many ways, but will it?  That’s up to us, its creators.  Intellectual intelligence without emotional intelligence has historically proven to be quite destructive.

It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with only primary consciousness will probably have to come first.
