Consulting and Rescuing Equine (CARE)

Consulting and Rescuing Equine (CARE), LLC’s mission is “To enrich the lives of animals and humans by promoting health and welfare for every species of animal.” Our focus is on helping the community keep their own equines, and also to provide a safe haven for rescued equines that reside at CARE Ranch.

Founded by siblings Sherrie and Dean Larson, it began by rescuing dogs and cats, then horses. Tragically and suddenly last year, Dean passed away from cancer, leaving Sherrie to operate the ranch and care for the rescued animals. As a way to deal with her grief, Sherrie developed CARE into an official 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization.

CARE’s business model expands on the traditional rescue of “shelter and adopt.” While CARE can rescue and shelter some equines on CARE ranch, we go a step beyond by providing financial aid for veterinary care and other professional services.

CARE serves the Kern River Valley and surrounding communities and is currently providing free equine health services, vaccinations and dental exams. These services are funded by a generous grant from The Virginia and Alfred Harrell Foundation.

As a bona fide nonprofit, CARE has achieved GuideStar’s highest level of recognition, the Platinum Seal of Transparency.

The impact of the COVID 19 virus is affecting the financial ability of our community to afford basic necessities and has already impacted the ability of some to keep their animals.

Many equines are at risk during this challenging time and many will end up at auction, at risk of being transported for slaughter—a horrible trip and worse death at the end of the road. CARE hopes to help those people and their equines stay together through this difficult time.
