Controller - Home Based - North East of the US
The Company
Established in 2012, the retail experience company has created substantial revenue and EBITDA.
Encompassing 29 stores across the US, they are predominantly located in malls and lifestyle centres in geographically affluent regions. The unique service provided has created a niche within the retail experience market.
The company runs its stores with 220 full-time employees and third-party contractors where necessary. Due to the nature of the service the business provides, the employee base is creative and passionate, which has created a fast-paced, upbeat environment.
A PE sponsor has recently injected $2M into the business to promote further growth. The established PE firm has undertaken substantial investments in the retail sector across North America in the lower to middle market.
With the recent investment, the business is currently in a growth transition and replacing its fluid operations with structure and process. Intern, there is an increased requirement for a financial controller to manage the fiscal element of the business.
The Role
Your role will be to manage the finance function of the business and report directly to an experienced and extremely passionate CEO.
Your ability to balance strategic work with core financial elements is key. In addition, ensuring reporting and liaising with the PE firm is paramount.
With the business having multiple retail outlets across the North East of the US, your role will involve approx. 30% of your time visiting sites.
This role will grow into a CFO role within the next few years for the right candidate.
What will success in this role look like?
- Completing an exit in 4 to 5 years
- Managing HR hybrid of internal and an external agency
- Continue to improve the procurement process
- Modernise and improve the finance process: Month closes, reporting, building a cadence calendar etc
- Integrate QuickBooks better
- Improve FP&A
- Gel with the existing team
- Get on top of reporting (delivering this on time)
- You will beA hands-on controller, ideally the no. 1 or 2 in finance in your current role
- Ambitious and driven towards achieving the skill set to become a CFO
- Based in the North East of the US
- Hands on and not afraid to roll up your sleeves
- Able to demonstrate a high EQ to deal with a highly creative employee base
- Match the CEO’s passion and enthusiasm to drive change and improvements across the business
- Able to clearly demonstrate strong FP&A across market analysis and price analysis
- Able to operate independently
- You will have experience in the following : 3-5 minimum in a previous Controller role
- Multi-unit businesses
- Retail (preferred), or any industry that is B2C
- Managing store P&L and Corporate P&L
- Working in a sub $75M revenue high growth company
- Closing the books and implementing reporting and metrics
- Managing brick and mortar business and landlord agreements
- Working in a Private Equity backed company
- Cost accounting on construction (building new outlets) (preferred, not essential)
- Francizing (preferred, not essential)
- Worked in a turnaround minor distressed environment
- Key Challenges : Managing a young and inexperienced work force who have a tendency to be precious over older ways of operating
- Training a team that has not had much exposure to financial metrics
- Company is currently in a turnaround situation, there is a considerable amount of lower-level accounting “clean-up” work involved. Suspected 6-8 months to get a straight edge.
Package
Basic Salary: $150,000 to $160,000 (negotiable)
Bonus: 30% - 50% of salary
