A conversation about AI that challenges our understanding of what’s possible.
What happens when you bring together one of the world’s leading experts on innovation and inclusion with an audience of eager learners? A conversation about AI that challenges our understanding of what’s possible.
Last week, as part of IFC's internal knowledge-sharing month, I had the privilege of hosting a fireside chat with Professor Dame Fiona Murray , Associate Dean of Innovation and Inclusion at MIT Sloan School of Management . Our discussion was a truly inspiring deep dive into AI’s transformative potential for global development.
We kicked off by emphasizing the importance of continuous education in AI and emerging technologies. In a world where technological advancements are happening at an unprecedented pace, staying updated is critical. Both Professor Murray and I agreed that fostering a culture of lifelong learning is essential for individuals and organizations to stay competitive and innovative.
Innovation in AI was another central theme of our conversation. We explored how AI can streamline organizational processes, enhancing both efficiency and employee satisfaction. For example, by automating administrative tasks, AI frees up time for employees to focus on more strategic and creative work—ultimately boosting productivity and job fulfillment.
One of the most exciting aspects of our discussion was AI’s role in revolutionizing healthcare. Professor Murray shared fascinating examples of how AI is being used to convert implicit knowledge into actionable insights, leading to more personalized, accurate patient care. It’s an exciting glimpse into how AI could reshape healthcare delivery worldwide, improving outcomes for patients everywhere.
We also discussed the future of data centers and the growing importance of renewable energy in optimizing their efficiency. As data centers consume vast amounts of energy, integrating renewable sources is both an environmentally responsible and economically sound strategy. We also touched on the need to bring advanced technologies like quantum computing closer to developing regions, ensuring they aren't left behind in the tech revolution.
Finally, we explored how synthetic data is helping to train more accurate and reliable AI models. With real-world data often limited or biased, synthetic data serves as a powerful tool to bridge the gap and enable more effective decision-making across sectors.

1moThank you Makhtar Diop and thanks to the entire IFC - International Finance Corporation team for inviting me to participate, and to Lana Graf, PhD for making the connection. It was an inspiring conversation and a chance to connect activities and thinking across three innovation horizons - the incremental improvements AI can make in our daily work, the platforms where AI and cloud infrastructure can transform how we use our assets and infrastructure, and the truly frontier ways in which ai could change lives for the better being pursued by entrepreneurs in deep tech around the world including those from our Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship at MIT and our MIT REAP - Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program.

1moWelcome to the UN Climate Change Conference COP29. The 2024 UN COP29 kicked off on Monday, Nov 11, in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, where global leaders will focus on Climate Change, Climate Finance and Solutions. How to accelerate the smooth transition to the green, inclusive and sustainable growth.? My leadership legacy: I am a graduate of the UNDP and (UNITAR). As a stellar servant, inspirational and transformational leader with world-class experience, I am honored to participate in the COP29 Multilateral Process of UNFCCC from Nov 11-22, and special activities of many multinational organizations, including OECD and WEF from Nov 4-22. I consider this opportunity as a sign of respect from the international community to what I am doing in the areas of green energy, circular, green and blue economies. What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)? Does AI have the potential to enable Climate Finance? How to define the impact of the implementation of response measures? On Monday, Nov 11, Parties agreed strong standards for a centralized carbon market under the UN. There’s more work to do, but this is a good start. When operational, will these carbon markets help countries implement their climate plans faster and cheaper?
