‘In Conversation’ Clair Dart

‘In Conversation’ Clair Dart

Today’s ‘In Conversation’ is with Clair Dart, Corporate Tax and VAT Senior Manager at Alliotts, Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors

In the current tough economy, it has never been more important to have good business and tax advice and as part of my initiative to stay connected during these difficult times I chose to link in with Clair as I was interested to find out how Alliotts are supporting their clients in these times and how they could help my clients and contacts.

As a Corporate Tax and VAT Senior Manager at Alliotts, amongst her other work Clair has been kept busy over the last few weeks with client concerns and questions in particular surrounding the Government support available for businesses in the current circumstances such as the furlough scheme, VAT deferral, the loan scheme or business rates reliefs and grants. Usually based in Alliotts’ London office, Clair is advising clients and holding video meetings from her home.

Specialists at the firm have been producing informative articles and webinars for clients and contacts on their website as changes are announced. These provide businesses and individuals with up to date information at their fingertips. In addition, Clair has been looking at ways in which businesses can cut taxes to save that ever important cash flow. One particular area for this has been the research and development (R&D) tax credits.

Approximately 66% of the businesses that are eligible for R&D tax credits do not make the claim and yet it could give them a further 130% reduction in their profits for the qualifying costs. There are numerous reasons why businesses do not claim; such as they think they are too small to do so (false), their project failed so they assume they cannot claim (false) or they think it only relates to science and technology industries (false).

Despite staff shortages, HMRC are maintaining a promise to process R&D claims within 28 days and therefore a claim now could quickly provide the cash, or save a cash outflow for a business that makes the crucial difference between surviving, or not.
