COP29 in Focus: Highlights, Recordings, and What's Next
The 2024 UN Climate Summit (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, concluded with a new finance goal and a milestone agreement on carbon markets. High-income countries committed $300 billion to help low-income nations reduce emissions and strengthen climate resilience, though this fell short of the $1.3 trillion requested. In this blog, we explore COP29's key agreements and share insights from RTI’s team on the ground.
Recordings From RTI Events at COP29
We co-hosted 'Advancing Soil Health and Green Fertilizers for Climate, Economic, and Nutritional Resilience' with World Agroforestry and USDA at the U.S. Center.
This event spotlighted global progress in scaling innovative solutions for soil health and sustainable agriculture. We shared our work on green ammonia technology development and new research exploring the potential of green fertilizer production (made with green ammonia) across Africa.
🔑 A key takeaway from our speakers: Scaling solutions requires tailored, context-specific approaches that are flexible, affordable, and deliver co-benefits for climate mitigation, conservation and the economy. A huge thank you to the speakers — Leigh Winowiecki, Ann Vaughan, Olutayo Akingbe, John Mundy, Daniel Lapidus — for emphasizing the urgent need to drive multi-sector collaboration in this critical space.

At the COP Resilience Hub, RTI co-hosted a panel session titled “Innovation and Technology Solutions for Sustainable Food and Water Systems.”
Here are three key takeaways:
1️⃣ Innovation is driving progress: AI tools and drought-resistant crops, for example, are transforming food systems, but adoption requires solutions that are tailored to the local context and that address cost barriers.
2️⃣ Community-driven, data-supported solutions are essential: Combining local knowledge with accessible, transparent data builds trust and supports effective action.
3️⃣ Partnerships and policies unlock impact: Strong policies and public-private collaborations bridge financial gaps and help drive sustainable growth.

RTI's Senior Climate Finance Advisor, Tom Bishop, spoke at the Save Soil Pavilion during the "Unlocking Agricultural Climate Finance" event.
The event offered insights into closing climate finance gaps in agriculture. Tom Bishop spoke about challenges such as collateral and incentives, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions that benefit both farmers and banks.
RTI hosted "Unleashing the Caribbean's Abundant Renewable Energy Potential" at the CARICOM Pavilion.
The Caribbean emits less than 0.5% of global greenhouse gases, but high energy costs from volatile fossil fuel imports make renewables crucial for energy independence, price stability, and resilience in extreme weather. Experts from the Caribbean Development Bank , USAID , Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency , Ministerio de Energia y Minas and RTI shared progress on renewable energy goals and new advancements in battery storage and innovative technologies. They also highlighted the need for market-based solutions, public funding to catalyze private investment, and stronger transmission infrastructure for a successful energy transition.
Climate Action Beyond COP29: Join Us on December 11 for a Webinar on Food Loss and Waste and Climate Change.
As part of the Climate Changes Webinar Series, leaders from around the globe will gather for a roundtable discussion on integrated strategies to reduce food loss and waste (FLW). Addressing FLW presents an opportunity for enhancing climate resilience and advancing food security, nutrition, and stronger economies. You'll gain practical insights into cost-effective approaches for reducing FLW in the public and private sector domestically and internationally, and learn about future research and emerging trends in this field.
