Coping in a Topsy-Turvey World

Coping in a Topsy-Turvey World

Sometimes the events in our world can be overwhelming and make us feel helpless and hopeless.

When surrounded by chaos and uncertainty, adopting a ‘proactive’ mindset can help maintain resilience and composure. Being "Proactive" provides timeless principles that can help everyone navigate the turbulent white waters of life. Here's how a Proactive person might approach the pressure of a world filled with chaos and uncertainty:

1. Embrace the Nature of the World: A key tenet of Being Proactive is the acceptance of the world's inherent unpredictability. A Proactive person recognises that chaos and uncertainty are part of the natural order of things. Instead of resisting or fearing these realities, they choose to accept them, understanding that they cannot control external events.

2. Focus on What's Within Your Control: Proactive people emphasize the importance of distinguishing between what is within your control and what isn't. In a chaotic world, you can't control global events or other people's actions, but you can control your own responses and attitudes. By focusing on your own actions and choices, you can maintain a sense of agency and inner calm.

3. Cultivate Resilience: Proactivity encourages the development of emotional resilience. When faced with chaos and uncertainty, a Proactive person remains steadfast in their values and principles. They do not allow external circumstances to dictate their emotional state. Instead, they adapt, persevere, and remain centred by the turbulence around them.

4. Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a central component of Proactivity. In the midst of chaos, a Proactive individual practices being present and aware of their thoughts and emotions. This mindfulness allows them to respond to challenging situations with greater clarity and composure rather than reacting impulsively.

5. Maintain a Long-Term Perspective: Proactivity encourages focusing on the long-term rather than getting caught up in short-term fluctuations and crises. A Proactive person understands that chaos and uncertainty are temporary and that history has shown that humanity has faced and overcome countless challenges. This perspective can provide solace and motivation during trying times.

6. Develop Gratitude: Proactive people emphasize the importance of gratitude for what they have, even in the face of chaos. By appreciating the gifts in life, no matter how small, a Proactive person can counterbalance the anxiety and negativity that may arise from the unpredictable nature of the world.

A Proactive approach to the pressure of a chaotic and uncertain world involves accepting the world's unpredictability, focusing on what's within your control, cultivating resilience, practicing mindfulness, maintaining a long-term perspective, and developing gratitude. These principles offer a timeless and practical route for anyone seeking to navigate the challenges of an unpredictable world with grace and fortitude.

Gratitude and Mindfulness are my go-to techniques but even then sometimes I can notice that I do them without much presence and intention, when I shift that they take on much more meaning and really do bring reprieve. Which of the strategies that you mention is your go to Brad Waldron?

I gave a presentation this week to a large AIGA audience that went very well. I’m still thankful for the opportunities I had to improve my presentation skills through your workshops at MRM as well as through your generous gifts of time with the Detroit UX Meetup ❤️
