Tired, Wired, Yet Inspired 🇺🇸 - Putting Scotland on the World Stage at SXSW 2024

We've loved reading the Foras #SXSW wrap-up posts from our cohort this week.

I wanted to add to the conversation with my own observations, too.

I'm sitting at Austin Airport with more free time than planned (another flight cancellation/delay - more on that later - I see you British Airways).

This was our 5th Foras Programme, having previously ventured to:

1. Silicon Valley - Startup Grind Global

2. Helsinki - Slush

3. New York - Tartan Week

4. Lisbon - Web Summit

2x of the big questions that gets asked about the trips (and rightly so) are what 1) the cohort; and 2) Scotland gets from it.

In my opinion:

Scotland Can't Afford to Not be Visible

A big hurdle that Scottish companies expanding to the US have is 'Why would I invest/work with you when I can choose from 1,000s of US startups?'

Not only are we competing with the US, we're also competing with the likes of 🇫🇷🇦🇹🇨🇦🇲🇪🇮🇪🇦🇷, all of whom had a very large presence at SXSW.

An event like SXSW is an opportunity to show the world that we're A) open for business, B) serious, and C) ready to compete

SXSW is a rare opportunity to not only be in the room with, but actively engage with world-leading investors, buyers, and ecosystem builders.

We had cohort members mixing with CTOs of the world’s top film and music production companies, their ideal target customers in big corporate, strategic investors and government agencies, and within that time, already firming up follow-up meetings, actions, and warm introductions.

This would never be possible online. Especially with the noise of LinkedIn, and email.

Getting outside our 'Bubble'

Everyone knows that getting out of your comfort zone is key, and similarly, so is getting outside of Scotland.

It's easy to fit into the norm of our ecosystem. The funding landscape, the ambition, the scale.

But when you venture out into somewhere like Austin, it opens your mind to what's truly possible.

Valuations here are bigger, deals are bigger, pitches are bolder. Is everything in Austin perfect? Of course not.

But there's a real opportunity to soak in the norms of a world-leading startup environment and share these learnings with your team, fellow founders, and rest of Scotland.

Being Vulnerable

One of the biggest impacts has been our cohorts coming together to be truly vulnerable.

When there's pressure to report to your board, to lead a team, to provide at home, there are few occasions where you can truly open up.

I see our cohorts as reminiscent of 'classmates' in the sense that many are on a similar journey, some are slightly further ahead, some earlier stage.

Because there are no hierarchies and there are shared values, it's been amazing to see our group come together to share wins, advice, and to lend an ear to real problems.

'Hunting as a Pack'

When you're at a large event/conference with a group you know, like, and trust, it's a game changer. Particularly when you deeply understand your fellow cohorts' businesses, you're able to facilitate introductions to investors, and buyers you meet who may be more relevant for someone else's company than your own.

Suddenly, a large majority of conversations you have become an opportunity for you to either discuss your own venture or make a relevant and timely introduction.

Colin Hewitt of Float Cash Flow Forecasting eloquently described this as 'hunting as a pack' after our inaugural trip to Silicon Valley back in 2022.

It's an important and great read. View here.

Ultimately, with each trip, we're building a stronger community of founders, and startup leaders (now at 89 'alumni'), a robust, and engaged international investor, and buyer network, and a greater appreciation of the art of the possible.

Each trip compounds and picks up where the previous one left off. Even after 2+ years of these excursions, the results so far are only the beginning of the curve.

❓What's Next?

We'll be at EIE, supporting Glasgow Tech Week, Turing Fest and are gathering interest for more immersive, cohort trips in 2024 to London Tech Week , San Francisco in Sept/Oct, and a return to Slush in November.
