Cost of living crisis sees a decrease in fresh veg consumption, but there's good news coming...

A bizarre day….just as I’m finishing recording a panel discussion segment for the upcoming 2022 TFP Trend Summit with industry experts about gut health, an email pops into my inbox from VegPower telling me how, due to the snow balling cost of living crisis, the British public is now cutting its fresh vegetable intake in favour of protecting other essential grocery. It’s clear that vegetables are not seen as essential in a cost of living crisis.

It was, therefore, ironic that we’d spend the previous hour talking about the importance of eating more fibre (for most people) to support having a healthy gut function which in turn effects a myriad of other functions. Vegetable sales are down by nine per cent compared to last year according to supermarket data, matching a new survey by YouGov, in which 26 per cent of participants said they had bought fewer fresh vegetables due to financial pressures.

Anna Taylor from The Food Foundation commented that “Vegetables are increasingly being seen as an unaffordable luxury and we are seeing signs of a worrying decline in sales”. As always, sadly the cost of living crisis is disproportionately effecting families earning under £30,000 p/a who are 178% are more likely to be cooking less at home and 122% more likely to be eating less veg as a direct consequence of rising energy costs according to VegPower. This, coupled with September being the 13th consecutive month that food prices have increased, means that food is often the only part of the household budget that can squeeze.

Consumers are having to make increasingly difficult choices. I did then see a glimmer of hope when I read about how VegPower were responding to this with the campaign ‘Simply Veg’ which is being supported by the likes of Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall and Judith Batchelar who commented “The challenge isn’t just that households can’t feed themselves well, but the problem is the message that eating healthily is expensive. We have to reframe that debate”.

Too true but it’s also the cost to cook vegetables that’s the issue. The VegPower alliance has enlisted the help of amazing chefs, leading nutritionists, food writers, and child psychologists to provide the best evidence-based support. They’ll be putting a “Simply Veg” filter on everything. Nothing they suggest will take much money, or much time, or endless patience and it’ll come in the form TikTok and Instagram content with recipes, money and effort saving tips, kids cooking, expert advice and prizes puzzles and games for kids.
