The Costly Mistake of Building the Wrong Thing (And How to Fix It)

I recently had a wake-up call that forced me to confront this exact issue with my nonprofit's annual fundraiser, Success Becomes Me. What I thought was a women's wealth conference turned out to be something entirely different - and it took me two grueling years to realize it.

The Power of Clarity

After nearly burning out from two challenging years of organizing this event, I found myself at a crossroads. I knew something had to change, but I wasn't sure what. So, I did what I always do when I need guidance - I got still and listened.

Through meditation, journaling, and deep introspection, I uncovered a profound truth: I had been building the wrong thing all along.

The Blinders of Conformity

When I first envisioned Success Becomes Me, it wasn't a conference at all. It was an activation - a transformative experience designed to ignite the potential within each attendee.

But somewhere along the way, I allowed others to put blinders on me. Well-meaning advisors who couldn't grasp the concept of an "activation" suggested we call it a conference instead. And just like that, my innovative vision was stuffed into a conventional box.

What happens when you have the wrong people around you that don't get it, that don't have big goal energy, that are thinking inside of boxes and literally operating based on what's been done in the past is that energy projects onto you.

Breaking Free from Limitations

Once I realized I'd been building the wrong thing, everything shifted. I gave myself permission to dream bigger, to think beyond the confines of what's been done before.

Here's what I learned in the process:

1. Trust your vision: If you have a unique idea that doesn't fit neatly into existing categories, don't force it. Trust that your innovative thinking is exactly what the world needs.

2. Choose your circle wisely: Surround yourself with people who can see beyond the status quo. They should challenge you to think bigger, not smaller.

3. Be willing to pivot: If something isn't working, have the courage to change course. It's not failure - it's evolution.

4. Create space for clarity: Regular meditation, journaling, and reflection are crucial for maintaining alignment with your true vision.

Armed with this newfound clarity, I'm excited to share that Success Becomes Me is evolving into something truly extraordinary. In March 2026, we're hosting a two-part event in New Orleans that will redefine what's possible in the realm of personal and professional transformation.
