Costly Mistake Tip "Bleeds"Print 101
I want to share a term with you. It is "bleed". Not what you think happens to you when you cut yourself. "Bleed" is a print term that means running the ink off the page. It is easy to understand. You either have ink run off the page or you have white paper showing.
Here is why I feel this is so important to write an article about it. "Bleed" or lack of it can make your printed piece look great or very bad. White showing where color should be, is not good. Conversely color showing where no color should be can make a show case printed piece appear unprofessional.
The other problem with having or not having bleed is price of the printed project. "Bleed" requires 1/8 inch more area where the bleed runs. If the entire page bleeds than you would need an 1/8 inch more area around the whole design. What is important about this is when printers estimate this piece they may not add that extra space to the quote. This means an incorrect price and layout. Both situations mean added cost to you once they realize the project has bleed.
So, two issues can happen if you and or your designer don't understand "bleed". You can get a printed piece that looks unprofessional and costs more.
