Are cracks forming in America's middle class?
CNN’s PM Plug-In is a weekday newsletter to catch you up on important news you may have missed during your busy day. Make sure to subscribe to stay in the know.
On paper, the US economy has been looking good, historically speaking: Low unemployment, robust consumer spending and a resilient stock market. But sky-high interest rates and persistent inflation are taking their toll on Americans, especially the middle class, which has seen its income growth lag behind the upper class over the past half-century, according to a recent Pew Research Center report.
"The economy is booming, and yet many Americans are still gasping for air financially. They simply don't have the breathing room to plan beyond their present needs," according to Jennifer Jones Austin, co-chair of the National True Cost of Living Coalition.
There is data to back that up: Americans are racking up debt, running low on savings, and dialing back their spending on everything from fast food to home goods and clothes.
➡️ Krystal Hur has more analysis of how middle-class Americans are getting squeezed.

💲 Fed forecast: The Federal Reserve keeps its benchmark lending rates at a 23-year high for the seventh meeting in a row. The decision comes just hours after a key government inflation report showed that price pressures are slowly easing for consumers, but the Fed says it expects inflation to be more stubborn this year than it previously thought.
🏀 Legend-turned-logo dies: "Mr. Clutch" Jerry West, 86, died this morning, according to the Los Angeles Clippers. West helped the Los Angeles Lakers to nine NBA Finals appearances & co-captained the US Olympic Basketball team that won the gold medal in 1960. After his playing career, the 14-time All-Star went on to coach the Lakers for several years and then took front-office positions with the Lakers and several other teams. West was also the inspiration for the NBA's logo.
