Crafting Adventures: A Journey into Commercial Filmmaking with Henry Littlechild
In the realm of commercial filmmaking, there are creators who craft more than just stories; they build experiences. One such visionary is Henry Littlechild, a seasoned director whose journey through the industry has been as captivating as the tales he weaves on screen. In an exclusive interview, Henry graciously shared insights into his background, standout moments in his career, and the exhilarating challenges of his latest project with BMW.
Henry's journey into filmmaking is reminiscent of a classic coming-of-age tale, filled with uncertainty and serendipity. With roots in art school, he initially explored photography and film, experimenting with short films that caught the eye of a creative in an ad agency. Encouraged to pursue directing, Henry embarked on a path fraught with challenges but fueled by passion. "It's quite difficult to get started," he admits, reflecting on the early days, "but it happened."
For Henry, the allure of directing lies in its kaleidoscopic nature. "You're always in a different place with slightly different people," he muses. From exotic locales to unexpected encounters, each project paints a unique canvas. One standout moment that epitomises this vibrancy is his collaboration with agency, The Game, and BMW, where he found himself on a safari shoot, seamlessly blending work and adventure.
Reflecting on his approach to the BMW campaign, Henry emphasises the importance of maintaining authenticity. "I tried to make it more real, bring it a bit more into the real world," he explains. "Just to make it seem quite relatable, like you're out for the day, and stuff starts happening." The client, Gabrielle Lemmle, was instrumental in this as she trusted Henry’s vision and believed in his approach of staying real from the beginning. However, working with live animals posed significant challenges. "The main challenge was the animals, and getting them to do those things," Henry admits. Yet, he also found unexpected rewards in the authenticity of their performances. "We got a lot more from them than we were expecting," he notes. The production also required meticulous planning and coordination, especially when working with dangerous animals like lions. The South African crew and service production was one of the best Henry has worked with and they played a vital role in overcoming the challenges presented. "You're in a Land Rover which has got a cage around it," Henry describes. "You can't move the animals; you've got to go to them." Despite the challenges, Henry found fulfilment in capturing spontaneous moments and bringing the campaign's vision to life. "Filmmaking is a little bit controlled, but you want a bit of spontaneity," he says. "When stuff does happen, that ends up being in the film."
Henry's portfolio boasts an array of work featuring animals, from comedic antics to majestic creatures. Reflecting on his experiences, he acknowledges the nuanced challenges of each project. Whether wrangling CGI creations or coaxing real-life lions, the key lies in adaptation and collaboration. "It's interesting because it's never the same," he remarks, emphasising the dynamic nature of his craft.

"You get to do these fun, creative ideas," he enthuses, relishing the ever-changing landscape of advertising.

While the allure of feature films beckons, he acknowledges the dedication required to pursue such endeavours. For now, he finds contentment in the whirlwind of commercial filmmaking, ever-anticipating the next story waiting to unfold.

It was a great pleasure to work with Henry. The set was anything but easy and normal and I would work with Henry and e+p Films again anytime. Nevertheless, this movie will remain one of the most special films of my career.
