At the Legally Speaking Podcast, we champion diversity and inclusion. Throughout Pride Month we will be revisiting some of our episodes with guests who have been at the forefront of LGBTQ+ campaigns in the legal sector.

In the second episode of our Thriving In Law miniseries, we welcomed Thrive Law solicitor and LGBTQ+ rights advocate Imogen Hamblin onto the show. After meeting Jodie Hill whilst studying for the profession, they started working together in July 2018. Like Jodie (see Episode 1) she holds a unique interest in mental health and coaching employers on creating a positive and safe environment, enabling employees to thrive! In this episode she discusses:

⚖️ Her experience prior to joining Thrive

⚖️ Why she is so passionate about wellbeing & mental health, alongside her pro-LGBT rights advocacy

⚖️ How far the UK has come over LGBT rights, but what more needs to be done in order to challenge stigma and resolve conflicts

⚖️ The nuances of LGBT inclusion in the workplace and the community

⚖️ How you can support the LGBT cause, regardless of your sexuality or gender

A view of Lake Mead has recently become more challenging and shallow. The largest reservoir in the United States and it provides water to 25 million people across three states and Mexico, however, at this moment in time, the water level is now so low that unpleasant discoveries have been made. Hidden in the depths, it has recently surfaced bodies of murder victims and by many is now being referred to as "dead pool" and if the lake keeps receding then it will no longer be able to produce hydropower or deliver water downstream.

Worryingly, Californians have been told to conserve water at home in the attempt to restrict water for themselves as the drought is expected to get worse during the summer months. Around the areas, people have been guided to limit any water wasting which includes unnecessary outdoor watering and water usage by 35%. This slow motion of climate change is alarming to many but not all are addressing this issue quickly enough and the consequences will have a greater impact sooner than expected.

For many agriculture farmers, they are really experiencing the challenges that this drought has brought to their lands as 75% of the water from Lake Mead goes to them. Also, the changes brought to the individuals around that rural area is resulting in insecure access to water as local residents are concerned with the situation. In the end, there have been reports that there is a necessity for a huge infrastructure project to be undertaken, since the proposed rethinking of some of the dam projects has not been acknowledged. However, new technologies may bring a solution faster than anticipated, but will it be enough and will it be too late?

A potentially surprising story to hit the headlines this week was that singer songwriter Justin Timberlake has sold the entirety of his music catalogue to IP investment and song management company: Hypnosis Song Management.

Using funds from their Blackstone-backed private fund, Hypnosis, - on behalf of Blackstone-backed Hipgnosis Songs Capital, - the company acquired ‘100% of all of Timberlake’s copyright, ownership and financial interests of the Writer and Publisher’s Share of Public Performance income, and the catalogue of musical compositions written by Justin Timberlake.’

In a statement, Timberlake revealed his excitement ‘to be partnering with (Hipgnosis founder and CEO Merck Mercuriadis),’ highlighting that ‘he values artists and their creative work and has always been a strong supporter of songwriters and storytelling.’

Whilst this decision is one usually taken by artists towards the end of their career, the ‘Cry Me a River’ singer is not the first to sell such aspects of his career to the company, with artists such as Shakira and Neil Young selling parts of their music catalogues to Hipgnosis Song Management also.

Whilst it may not be common, it does lead us to question whether or not such a commercial decision may gradually become the new norm from artists within the music industry.

Consumers have been feeling the effects of a rise in fuel prices for a while now, and with no end in sight, many have just accepted this part of the increase in price of living.

However, with prices continuing to rise, the RAC have now got involved, rallying on the side of motorists who they say are now having to pay on average £98/£102 to fill a tank with Petrol/Diesel. These prices are pretty horrific when compared to only a year ago.

Consumer and logistics firms are continuing to suffer because of these prices, with consumers arguably hit the hardest. Not only is the average consumer seeing a price rise at the pump, but the price of any product that requires transport to get to shoppers is also going up, due to the price increase affecting the logistics companies also. This, on top of the rise in household fuel prices, is starting to have an almost unaffordable effect on the price of living for most people.

Surely now is the time something must be done? It is foreseeable that the government, who are still reeling from Partygate, may see this as an opportunity to regain some confidence from the electorate. Especially as this week they have been clearly divided by the confidence vote in the Prime Minister. Could stepping in and making some serious effort to reduce this re-solidify the party, and get some voters back on side at the same time?

Whether that is the reasoning or not, something has to be done about this, sooner rather than later, as the cost of living is becoming unsustainable for a large percentage of the population.
