Create psychological safety

Empowered teams confidently express themselves—whether it's sharing difficult information, daring to ask questions that might seem simple, or putting forward bold ideas. They feel secure challenging conventional wisdom.

Sometimes it might seem a bit chaotic, but when these teams are open and honest with one another, they can work smoothly to bring about changes or seize opportunities.

Once again, you—the leader, set the tone by creating a sense of psycological safety.

Show respect, be courteous, and engaged in all your interactions. Demand that every team member upholds the same level of decency. 

The group’s well-being depends on you!

If you see any of these undermining behaviors, address them:

  • Interrupting
  • Taking credit for others’ ideas
  • Scoffing at others’ suggestions
  • Giving patronizing, unsolicited advice
  • Having side conversations during meetings

You can do it in the moment:

Or privately point out the behavior and its impact:

Andrea, let's listen with respect and attention to our colleagues and avoid interrupting them, because that's how we all learn.

Avoid shaming people when you give feedback. Instead, use neutral language to make them aware of their behaviors and the effect those actions have.

Remember:

Safety doesn’t equal harmony. 

Indeed, you might notice increased disagreement and emotion when people feel safe questioning you or each other.

This phenomenon occurs because a safe environment encourages individuals to share their genuine thoughts and feelings, even if they differ from the prevailing consensus. In such an atmosphere, team members are more likely to voice concerns, challenge assumptions, and propose alternative solutions.

This diversity of thought sparks creative tension, leading to a more robust exploration of ideas.

This is a very important point Margarita Vargas! Creating a safe space where every voice is heard is CRITICAL to the success of any business or organization. Oftentimes, the best ideas come from allowing open, honest, sometimes unfiltered feedback. Furthermore, it provides associates a sense of ownership and inclusion which improves performance. Creating this open communication environment is also critical for calling out red flags.🚩 I can’t tell you how many times throughput my career mistakes were caught early by fostering this open communication environment.
