Create Your Own Cult

Create Your Own Cult

My video commentary on today's article is HERE

Irene Carter is an interior designer and long time client. One of the most fun things I’ve had the opportunity to do with her is to create a cult.

I highly advise that you create a cult if at all possible.

What we quickly figured out is that while people want to be proud of their house, what they really want is for other people to say nice things about their house when they visit.

They want to belong to the “cool kids house club”.

But they are also deathly afraid of making a mistake.

So they want to be told what to do.

Irene tells them that.

She says it loudly and often, and lots and lots of people will tell you that her “vision” is what separates her from all the gazillion of other interior designers that our out their plying their trade.

And because Irene has the social proof, huge numbers of people want to become a part of her cult (or you can call it a tribe if that makes you squeamish )

And guess what?

They’ll pay whatever Irene wants to charge.

Is she really better than the other interior designers? It doesn’t make the least bit of difference. She’s created this cult/tribe/community…call it what you will…and once you’ve done that price no longer is a factor.

So how do you create your cult?

Two things.

Thing #1: Have a positioning statement that sums up what you do in a way that breaks through the clutter.

Mine is a bit outrageous…I’ll be the first to admit that…and, it’s not one I’d necessarily recommend to you. (But it works great for me.)

You’ve seen my logo. Real classy MS with my name. Looks super professional.

Then I have my tagline at the bottom of it.

“Sell Shit To Rich People.”

Huh?

Yup…sell shit to rich people.

That’s what I’m all about.

If you want to sell your shit to poor people, go right ahead.

That’s not what I do, but if it makes you happy selling to poor people who ain’t got no money…go ahead, be my guest.

I teach people how to sell shit to rich people.

You can love it…loath it…think it’s super cool or totally unprofessional…I don’t care.

Because…for the people who get me…who are a part of my tribe…it totally resonates with them.

And that’s all that matters.

Thing #2: Produce a boatload of content that supports your positioning statement.

This is what all of my most successful clients do…it’s what I do…it’s what you need to do if you want to create a cult of your own.

Food for thought

Mark

PS: A big part of producing a boatload of content, is developing stories about you and what you do. That's the topicI'm focusing on in this month's Whales Not Minnows Video Newsletter. Take it out for a FREE test drive HERE

If you want to separate yourself from the competition and get the wealthy calling you (rather than you chasing after them) you've got to master the skill of communicating interesting stories. That's what I'm teaching you how to do this month in my Whales Not Minnows Video Newsletter. More information is HERE
