Creating Impact on Your Own Journey

Sometimes, we hear the word ‘leadership’ and immediately think of a position to be filled or a rank that signifies accomplishments. Yes, leadership can come in the form of positions and ranks, but it goes beyond those. Leadership is about creating value. It’s about taking the wheel and driving everyone to success. It’s also about stepping up to bridge gaps when no one else does, even without the ‘position’ or ‘rank’. Leadership is all about making an impact with or without a designated role.

The thing about impact is that it doesn’t have to be grandiose to matter. It’s easy to get carried away pursuing numbers, forgetting that each and every single one of those ‘numbers’ matter. You don’t have to wait till you’re on top to start giving back; you can do it on your way there. It’s not about having it all, but being intentional with what you have. Everywhere you have gotten to is a journey for someone else. If you think you’ve not made it far enough, remember that there are still people behind you, looking up to you for guidance or inspiration.

There are some challenges I encountered on my way up my career ladder that could have been avoided if I had a mentor to guide and advise me. I may not have had that opportunity, but I realised that I could give other women that opportunity. This was why I decided to start the Working Girl Circle, a community to help other career women achieve conscious growth on their own journeys.

You don’t have to wait for a title to start playing your part; you can lead without one. So, light up that torch and start paving a way for those in the dark. Impact begins with you—it begins with one person’s courage to step up, stand out, and make a difference.
