Creating Psychological Safety in Team Meetings

Image ID:

Picture this - a junior team member, Sarah, bravely shares an idea in a meeting, only to be abruptly dismissed by a senior colleague. The team leader fails to intervene, leaving Sarah feeling devalued and other team members hesitant to speak up in the future.

Many of us have been in similar scenarios before and for some it might be water off a duck’s back, but for others it can harm their confidence and potentially their career.  Nobody wants to be that person right?

This scenario highlights the need for psychological safety in team meetings. Without it, creativity and innovation can be stifled, and valuable contributions may go unheard.

So let's explore key strategies to prevent such situations and create environments where all team members feel empowered to contribute:

  1. Set clear expectations - Establish ground rules that promote respect and open communication in all work communications.
  2. Lead by example - Leaders, demonstrate vulnerability and openness to feedback, too.
  3. Encourage participation - Actively invite input from all team members, especially those who are typically quiet.
  4. Practice active listening - Show genuine interest in others' ideas and perspectives.
  5. Respond positively to contributions - Acknowledge all input, even if you disagree.
  6. Address microaggressions promptly - Don't let harmful comments or behaviours slide.
  7. Embrace diverse thinking styles - Accommodate different communication preferences and cognitive approaches.
  8. Follow up on ideas - Show that all contributions are valued by acting on or discussing them further.

By doing the above you can create an environment where team members feel safe to express ideas, take risks, and contribute fully to discussions. This not only enhances DEIA efforts but also helps drive innovation and team performance. WINNING 🏆

When it comes to planning events, true inclusivity means more than just inviting people—it’s about making sure the content we share speaks to all audiences, reflecting diverse backgrounds, experiences and abilities 🙌

Just imagine an event where everyone feels heard, seen and engaged. Amazing right?  But often I hear (through the grapevine admittedly) the rebuttal -  “we don't have time for this event, next time..” or “we don’t have the budget” or “our audiences don’t need this for this particular event”

👀 Imagine instead if…

👉 we could start actually including diverse voices, making sure that our content is accessible and creates interactive and engaging spaces where every attendee has the same experience.

So if you’re into that kind of thing (and if not why not?!) Check out three quick ways you can start rethinking your event content.  🔽

  1. Ensure your content reflects diverse perspectives by inviting speakers from various backgrounds and covering topics that resonate with different communities. Achieve this by proactively sourcing underrepresented voices and collaborating with diverse speaker bureaus to ensure your lineup reflects a rich mix of backgrounds, experiences and expertise.
  2. Make content accessible for all by offering options like captioning, sign language interpreters and multi-language translations. You can achieve this by partnering with accessibility service providers and integrating these tools into your event platform or onsite setup.
  3. Incorporate interactive sessions that allow attendees to share their unique experiences and tailor content that acknowledges different cultural, generational, and industry-specific needs. This can be achieved by using live polls, Q&A sessions, and targeted breakout groups to foster engagement across diverse attendee profiles.

September is #DeafAwarenessMonth -

So I wanted to share a brilliant Linkedin post written by Meg Strahle highlighting how on the sustainability journey we still need to consider people as well as the planet.

Read Meg’s thoughts here:

I don’t often like to speak up about my disability because I am so much more than it, but I will always speak up to make sure that I can turn around and see that people coming up behind me don’t need to fight for basic accessibility needs.

The other day, a colleague of mine sent me two LinkedIn posts of people from my industry - sustainability and events - talking about ‘enough is enough’ with the use of carpet in the industry, strongly recommending that we stop using them. As someone who works in sustainability, I am well aware of the waste that it causes when you don’t have appropriate end of life planning in place.

Let's take a quick pause here, and ask yourself, why did we even use carpet in the first place? Who does this benefit? What happens when we remove carpet from a space?
