CULTURE BITE #3

Time drives by so fast. We consume articles, videos & photos at such a rapid speed that we almost forget about most of things. With this newsletter, I will curate the best cultural/political content for you. It is short. It is a variation of different media. And begins with positive content!

Meet the girl turning trash into treasure in Malaysia

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, at least 14 million tons of plastic end up in the world's oceans every year. That's why Sydney Steenland - who was living on a boat with her family after they got into financial difficulties - decided to set up a social enterprise project. The so called "Sea Monkey Project" recycles discarded plastics and turns them into ethical souvenirs.

This project has upcycled more than 22,500 products and has organised close to 10,000 educational workshops.

Podcast

My latest podcast episode: #42 Being bicultural - blessing or curse? - with my wonderful former colleague Dr. Michela Coppola🎙

Many people who were born in foreign countries and grew up biculturally feel "stuck between cultures". They are trying to find their identity and/or have big challenges with these culture clashes. You can see your biculturality as a blessing or a curse.

What about migrants who come to Germany?

I talked with Michela about her life as an italian migrant in Germany. We talked about myths, prejudices and the italian culture - how she feels "stuck between cultures" - and how she reacts when shes confronted with nonsense prejudices.

Did you know?

London's Horniman Museum announced that it will return 72 artifacts to Nigeria that British troops have stolen in the 19th century. In 1897, British forces looted Benin City and stole uo to 3,000 objects.

“The evidence is very clear that these objects were acquired through force,” says Eve Salomon, chair of the Horniman museum, in a statement, “and external consultation supported our view that it is both moral and appropriate to return their ownership to Nigeria.”

But not only museums are thinking about giving back artifacts that originally belonged Nigeria. Also the Oxford University may return upto 97 items back to the country.

#theotherside

Did you know how beautiful Uzbekistan is? This is a Reel (short video) about its beauty - on Instagram you can discover other beautiful impressions of this country.

#theotherside is a format that shows "the other side" of a country or a culture. Normally we are supposed to see just the negative side of a country or culture. With this format, I want to start a new era of seeing both sides of countries or cultures.
