Culture Boost: Reward HOW Your People Deliver Results And Not Just The Results Itself

I think we all can agree that great leadership must also account for the journey... how great leaders lead us and achieve the incredible success they do.

As I mention in a previous article, "90% Of All Leaders Are Actually NOT, They Are Just People In Positions Of Authority", look no further than Attila the Hun and Mahatma Ghandi. Attila The Hun destroyed everything and everyone in his wake. Hundreds of thousands perished in his ascension. Mahatma Ghandi harmed not a thing nor a single person. Two extremely opposite approaches on the path toward an enormously successful outcome. In this example, a leader who conquered almost all of central and eastern Europe through fear, intimidation and violence and the other, a leader who liberated a nation through peace, love and empathy. Again, both successful human beings in terms of achieving an incredible and memorable outcome but, how they both got there couldn't have been more opposite. Therefore, how we define what a great leader is includes more than just the end result, it includes the journey, their approach in every step along the way in getting there.

The same holds true for our people, our employees. If we are to fairly judge and reward them we must also examine how they create a successful outcome!

When we as managers and leaders open our eyes to how our people achieve great results, we become more able to measure and reward the journey along with results. By doing so, we dramatically reduce bullying, back stabbing, manipulation, deceit, politics and more!

The unfortunate truth is, I am often engaged because managers and leaders don't pay close enough attention to HOW their people are working together in producing the desired results. So many toxic cultures are the way they are because organizations commonly devolve into true leader deprived environments that reward bullies, back stabbers, deceitful and manipulative employees who also happen to produce impeccable results. Those leaders are NOT recognizing how they deliver results and who they are stepping on and hurting along the way. The truth is, I see too many companies rewarding results AND bad behavior.

Conversely, when we examine, measure and reward people based on how they deliver results along with the results itself, what that company is saying to their employees is that we see, appreciate and value you as a human being, a whole person, not just a means to an end for profit. We see how some people lift others up, bring joy and laughter to the journey, put others ahead of themselves. We see flexibility, open mindedness, curiosity and creativity. When organizations begin rewarding people for these highly valued behaviors we begin to also start witnessing improved teamwork, communication, productivity and comradery. We begin to build a better, healthy culture!

All anyone truly wants is to be compensated AND appreciated for their good work. If we simply pay closer attention to those special people, the ones who deliver their work in a beautiful way, and we learn how to celebrate that, the journey for everyone else also becomes more beautiful.

Andrew Kolikoff I'm puzzled by the aspersions pointed at my good friend Attila in your recent posts. In fact, to his people he was a great leader who espoused values such as loyalty, courage, desire, stamina, empathy, tenacity and even stewardship. Yes, his competitive landscape demanded great savagery to win in his market over 2,000 years ago, but inside his organization he was not only feared but also respected and admired. I agree with you that the internal cultural alignment (how we do things here) combined with the results achieved determine the effectiveness of the culture. But those choices of what behaviors are valued are not necessarily always warm and fuzzy, but sometimes must be cold and crystal clear to not only thrive, but to even survive as an organization. What say you, Obe Wan?

Couldn't agree more, Andrew Kolikoff. Your core point is the fundamental difference between a thriving culture and a toxic one. "When we examine, measure and reward people based on how they deliver results along with the result itself, what that company is saying to their employees is that we see, appreciate and value you as a human being."
