Cupid's allure to golf
What is the allure of our business?
Does it simply lie in a love of the game? Perhaps it is the opportunity to socialize with friends? Or, simply our connection with nature?
The good folks at Drummond Golf capture the spirit of the game well in the video below
For me it was initially an unbridled passion for playing the sport. All I wanted to do is play, and play better than did the round before. Now, a more "seasoned" golfer ... I find myself appreciating the connection with nature. Like this past week - when I found myself in Pinehurst playing a quick 18 at Mid Pines... me, tall southern pines, and genius of Donald Ross. It is one of those stop and smell the roses moments.
But do we? Smell the roses that is...?
No matter what brought us to the game ... at some point it transitioned into the business. Again speaking for myself - it has always been a love of the atmosphere of a club. My "office" is 150+ acres of beautiful green grass that others would die for. However as we are all keenly aware the long hours, weekends and holiday are often overlooked by others.
So how do we keep our spark with golf alive?
Here are my Top 10 ways to keep your love of the game alive, while helping your business. Consider it a Dr. Phil moment
- Play more golf! I know simple right! However you will see things at your course that your customer sees everyday, or perhaps if playing elsewhere you notice an improvement you could make at your operation. Play more golf ... and your love of the business will follow.
- Teach your significant other to play the game. The benefits should go whiteout saying on this one.
- Grow your junior program. Passing along the game is not only personally rewarding to you. But, could be to your bottom line as those golfers grow up.
- Health Benefits. Golfers on average live five to seven years longer than non-golfers. A healthy body and mind will make those long summer days at the course more bearable.
- Networking. Play with your customers... ALL of them. See your business through their eyes. You may be surprised what you find out.
- Socializing. Grow your circle of friends - as golf friends tend to last a long time.
- Learn About Your Customer. You have heard this one before... want to know something about someone. Spent four hours attempting to hit a golf ball with them.
- Learn About Yourself. Patience in golf and business are both prudent.
- Captured Audience. Looking to close a deal? On the golf course you have a 4-5 hour sales window to make it happen. Made easier ... if you are a more accomplished golfer that can help your client improve their own games while playing.
- Gifting. This last one may seem like a stretch, but hear me out. Have a connection with a perspective client through golf? How much easier is it to foster that relationship if you bought then latest golf book? Or, took them to the club to play? A common bond helps your business.
When you fall in love with golf, you seldom fall easy. Its obsession at first sight

This Valentine's Day reflect on why you love the game and foster your relationship with it.
