Cuts to Cultural Funding: How You Can Support
Balancing the budget of Miami New Drama is akin to artistic alchemy. With less than 35% of our budget covered by ticket sales, we rely heavily on the generous support of individual donors, major foundations like the Knight Foundation , The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation and The Shubert Foundation Inc., and crucial government support from the City of Miami Beach , Miami-Dade County , and the State of Florida. However, this year marks a challenging moment as the governor has decided to veto all cultural organization support in Florida for the first time in Miami New Drama's history.
This decision means that, while last year we received $150,000 from the state of Florida, this year we will receive nothing at all. This poses significant challenges for us, as $150,000 represents a substantial portion of funding for our productions and our educational programs.
Funding the arts represents less than 0.03% of the state budget, but it speaks volumes about who we are as a state and as a country. The arts are the legacy we give to the future. They are the mirror through which society sees itself and the hammer with which we help shape it.
We turn to you for support. Not only are we asking you to donate to Miami New Drama if you can, but also to write to your State Representative to express your support for Miami New Drama and all the amazing arts organizations that enrich the quality of life in Florida.
With gratitude,
Artistic Director
