CVs: 5 Tips to Craft a Standout CV

I’ve seen thousands of CVs, probably hundreds of thousands of CVs. Some good ones, some great ones and some absolutely rubbish ones but the thing is, that’s my opinion. Your opinion might be different and the hiring manager, the line manager and the recruitment software might have a different opinion still.

 

Opinion based documents are difficult to get right, because there is no right, but there are a few things we can do to make sure we are on the right track, so I’ve put together my 5 tips to crafting a stand out CV.

 

1)     Know Your Audience

 

Rather than tailoring your CV for each job, understand who your main audience is likely to be. For instance, if you're applying for a technical leadership position, expect your CV to be reviewed by senior HR leaders or CEOs. Focus on showcasing your impact and contributions in a concise and impactful manner that resonates with this audience rather than filling your roles and responsibilities with a sea of keywords.

 

2)     Highlight Impactful Achievements

 

Instead of listing generic job duties, emphasise your achievements and the impact you've had in your previous roles. Quantify your accomplishments where possible to demonstrate your value proposition effectively. For example, mention how you increased revenue, optimised processes, or led successful initiatives and be specific and/or refer back to point one.

 

3)     Simplify and Condense

 

Keep your CV concise and to the point. Focus on your most recent two roles to highlight your career trajectory and impact. If your last two roles represent the last 5-10 years of your career the rest of your CV is less important than you realise.  Use efficient language and formatting to maximize the use of available space. Prioritise relevant information that fits with the job you're applying for and remove any unnecessary details, like the shelf stacking role you had in 1990 or the paper round that taught you efficient time management skills.

 

4)     Avoid Including Pictures

 

To maintain professionalism and avoid introducing bias, don’t include photos (unless you are really really, really, ridiculously good looking) on your CV. Your qualifications and achievements should be the primary focus of your application, and visuals are unnecessary distractions.

 

5)     Double-Check Contact Details

 

Finally, double check your contact details. Honestly, I’m still surprised at how I’m supposed to set up a teams interview for a candidate with an email address like bigdicky90@hotmail, or worse an excellent candidate with an incorrect phone number. Small mistakes here can cost you big and can lead to missed opportunities or delays in communication with potential employers. Verify your email address, phone number, and any other contact information before submitting your CV.

 

By following these tips, you can create a compelling CV that effectively showcases your skills, experiences, and achievements, increasing your chances of securing interviews and landing decent job opportunities. Remember a CV is like a marketing pamphlet for your experience - it opens the door and gets you in front of decision makers so it needs to be true to you, but like all marketing, you need to make the most of your experience – don’t embellish though, you will get caught out.
