CV's Weekly Coaching News

The big question following events this week is where José Mourinho will go next, after one of the most successful managers of all-time was sacked by Roma. The identity of his replacement was swiftly revealed, with former Romacaptain Daniele De Rossi taking the reins. Elsewhere in Serie A, Empoli dismissed Aurelio Andreazzoli after less than four months in charge. Davide Nicola becomes the club’s third manager of a season in which they have so far won just three league games out of 20. In the Netherlands, AZ Alkmaar fired London-born head coach Pascal Jansen, with the club fourth in the Eredivisie table. Assistant coach Maarten Martens takes over until the end of the season. Very much remaining in her role is England manager Sarina Wiegman, who has extended her contract to 2027, shortly after being named women’s coach of the year at FIFA’s annual awards. In Scotland, Sweden’s Elena Sadiku has begun work as Celtic FC Women’s first-ever female head coach.

After only six games in charge of Forest Green Rovers and plenty of headlines, Troy Deeney received his marching orders from the League Two strugglers. Meanwhile, Swindon Town parted company with Michael Flynn, six weeks after he signed a contract extension to the end of the 2025/26 season.   In League One news, Lincoln City have welcomed back Chris Cohen as assistant head coach on a permanent deal, after he filled the role on a short-term basis earlier this season. Cheltenham have also recruited an assistant, with former Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough joining Darrell Clarke's backroom team. Another EFL appointment to round off our update, with Notts Countynaming Stuart Maynard as head coach. Maynard impressed his new bosses by guiding semi-professional Wealdstone to National League stability over the past three years.

SCOUT REPORT / RADU DRAGUSIN

The January transfer window has been relatively quiet so far, but Tottenham have been busy strengthening Ange Postecoglou’s options.
